Devils Point Plymouth - The report 26/5/8

Well - what can I say - I went - I saw - I didnt conquer

Went down to the 'platforms on Saturday to take a looksee and looked good, nice deep water - some 30m deep straight off the wall and the UK record Conger caught here so looked okay .... bait bought - tackle shop (Victoria Road) really helpful with advice so packed up ready to go on Sunday - sent the missus shopping etc and went down - it was PACKED OUT there must have been 20 bods on the platforms - not an inch left .... walked around to the rocks and also loads there - bugger - so left but thought I'd come back for an evening bash after the sun went down (it was baking hot !) ....... new FPO arranged - back down in the evening for the 2200 HW - STILL BLOODY PACKED so gave up ..... it must have been my inconsolable sobbing that made the FPO say "why dont you try tommorow early as HW is 0900" she's getting the hang of this fishing lark so that was the plan.

Up at the crack of dawn and down to the platforms for 0600 - pouring rain - "that'll keep the buggers away" I thought ..... but hardy lot these Devonians - BLOODY STILL BLOODY PACKED could not believe it so thought gotta use up my bait somewhere so went to the rocks just to the left of the platforms where it is not too bad in daylight apparently ...

Set up in the pouring rain - thank goodness I decided to take my small buddy tent thing to keep dry (ish).

So the fishing - Fished 0630 - 1030 HW 0930 calm seas but heavy rain then clear skies ...

Knew it was a tackle graveyard so rigged up one rod to blast out with rotten bottoms etc. Other spinning rod .... ah - what spinning rod - bugger left it at home - so used my bass rod - not ideal but it worked

Wanted to catch some real West country Pollack like Henry on the tele shows you .... I was not dissapointed, caught some striking coloured Pollack including some on shrimp feathers. The Pollack round our way are silver with grey backs, these West country versions were beautiful green tinge & brown - just like Henry promised - really chuffed with these even if they were no bigger than a pound. Other rod - Had small Ballan Wrasse and surprisingly did not loose a single bit of gear - only disasters were one bent hook pulling out of a snag (than goodness for 25lb line) and a birdie resulting in cutting off some line - happened as I decided to slide down the rocks as I cast

So - managed to get some fishing in - have booked a spot on the platforms for an hour in May 2010 ....

The 'platforms - on a quiet Saturday morning when I could not go fishing

A long way down !

The rocks just to the left of the platforms ...

The Royal Navy giving some moral support ...

Henry's West County Rock Pollack ...

Ballan Wrasse

Thumbs up Re: Devils Point Plymouth - The report 26/5/8

Enjoyable report & pics mate. You definately earned those fish. I always find that Devon Pollack are suckers for small hot orange redgills fished sink & draw...

Re: Devils Point Plymouth - The report 26/5/8

there is a great rock mark near there that is as good and always empty, its 100 yds west of a pier....think its called east kings pier (i might be wrong). theres a hidden ladder giving access down to a deep rock mark.
