Blue Anchor 27 May 2008

Afternoon All,

A first for me today. I think I caught my first ever Codling.

I was fishing off the wall about 150 yards the Minehead side of the toilets. Just clear of the rocks on the beach if you know the seafront.

I was hoping to catch a Thornback and had a fair sized Mackeral fillet on one of my homemade "piggyback" hooks (see the post in tips if you're interested) on a pulley rig.

The bite was a good pull down then a slack liner and I felt the fish pulling as soon as I tightened into it. A smashing little Codling, I think. As I've never caught one before I'm not really certain. It had a whisker under it's bottom jaw and didn't look at all like the Whiting, Pout that I usually catch off the wall.

Oh, I guess it weighed nearly 2lb.

It was my only fish of the session but I'm chuffed to bits anyway.

Tight lines to all.

Re: Blue Anchor 27 May 2008

Defo looks like a cod - fat head and belly, slender tail, brown speckled colour & a barb - sounds like a cod to me !

Well done - always a nice feeling to get a new species ....
