Huss Heaven

A snap decision at work on Saturday afternoon resulted in me joining Mark and Pete that evening on the way down to the South Hams for an evening chasing Huss, due to one thing and another we did'nt make the mark till 9ish, (another one of Mark's "little, easy, won't take long" walks!) Max, of course, accompanied us and amused himself chasing unseen things in the dark, and worrying me when going too near the edge of, from what I could see, some pretty serious drops.
Anyhow, by half past 9, with a bright moonlit sky and a reasonable swell, we had put out an assortment of Squid and fish baits on heavy rods and 30lb line, with 6/0 pennels and 100-150lb hooklinks and rotten bottoms, (less said about that the better), and it was'nt long before Pete had the first Huss, a small fish of about 2 or 3lbs, which was quickly returned, Mark was next, no small fish for him! A cracking fish of 8lb joined us for an impromtu photo session on the rocks

His next cast resulted in a bite within 5 minutes, and as I was chatting to him he grabbed the rod and struck into this beast

A belting fish of 10lb 15oz, that's a testament to this guys attitude to angling, most people would have called it 11! At least I got it to smile for the camera

Don't worry about the blood, all the fish were nicely hooked, and were returned safely, we had no intention of slaughtering these magnificent
creatures. They were all weighed in a Pike sling, and Max checked all fish handling procedures!

That was a way of slipping a hound picture in, 'cos if I did'nt, Twiddler would give me a hard time!
I then managed a small fish of about 2lbs, then Pete had a nice fish that probably touched 4lbs, he also had a reasonable Rockling soon after, which, on Mark's suggestion, (I tell you, this boy knows his onions, which is just as well really, 'cos according to rumour, they are HUGE!) went on as bait, within 10 minutes the Rockling did its job, and a hard fight gave Pete this

A beauty of exactly 11 lbs! Although this guy has caught massive fish all over the world, his delight was evident when he took this one. A true angler.

After the excitement had died down and Pete had sent the remains of the Rockling out again, I say remains, the fish started out just shy of a foot long, it went back out considerably foreshortened, believes in getting the most out of a bait, does our Pete! I had another bite which resulted in a fish of 3lbs, with snarfed down a 2 sprat and slice of mackerel cocktail, on pennel rigged 6/0 79515's, some gob on those things.
It went a little quiet for a while, and we sat, headlamps off, enjoying the moonlit sea and the sound of the waves, when something passed my eyes, it was my rod butt, a quick grab and fumble for the on switch on the headlamp and I was cranking in a heavy weight which was pulling back in a determined manner! Mark scrambled down the rocks again and did the honours with his usual expertise, and brought this back up

8lbs 8oz and a new pb for me, which quite literally had me shaking at the knees! It took a sandeel/squid cocktail, (3 large eels, wrapped in a squid mantle, liberally wrapped in bait elastic) That was it for me, we'd had a cracking evening's sport, all fish went back nicely, and I was in good company, can't ask for more than that, so I packed in, content with things, and eventually got to bed at 5 a.m., which i have'nt done since my wild and reckless youth, Max is still asleep as I write this now, at 1pm the next day, I won't get a peep out of him till at least 3!

Stay safe, be lucky and if you see my soon to be ex wife, run away, wish I had!

Ian

Re: Huss Heaven

Well done Ian, a superb session by the sounds of it.

What is it about Mark then that he always has to go catching the biggest fish?? Damn it, that boy is an angling machine I tell ya! Still, I see all three of you had decent fish, so fair play mate, a top night. Well worth the late return I'd say.
