Wrecking Exmouth Smuggler5 9th Feb

Our club (Blandford SAC) books 1 boat trip per month, normally out of Dorset, Poole or Weymouth. For the last 3 years we have booked our January and February trips with Colin Dukes who runs Smuggler5 out of Dartmouth. Last Saturday saw the first trip in those three years that actually went ahead rather than being blown off.

I drove down to Exmouth with the Missus and wee man in tow from our castle in Buckinghamshire to Exmouth on Friday afternoon, 200 miles, 4 hours, no problem. Had a nice meal and a bottle of plonk in the Mexican restaurant in town and was nicely tucked in bed for 10.30 ready for a 6am alarm, which went off as told to. No time for brekky as I hit the snooze button, but just the once....

Got down to the harbourside to meet a bunch of (11) weary travellers and 1 happy captain who told us we'd have plenty of time to catch up on our sleep as we were facing a 3 1/2 hour steam to the wreck.......

Once we got to the wreck we found out why we had waited 3 years to fish in the South West at this time of year. Every drift over the wreck and at least 3 or four rods were into fish... and I mean fish! I had 12 of the 52 fish we boated and the number of fish under 10lb could be counted on the fingers of one hand. Most fish were between 10-15lb with a good few over the 15lb mark and one 20lb fish - all pollock. And boy do these fish go - the first 10 seconds is mad but they fight all the way up, fishing at its best!

Can't wait to go again! Here's one of about 18lb

Nice one Andy. Hell of a trip.

Gotta say that I like that Mexican too... Not so much for the food, but more for the free slammers the half cut waiter started dishing out towards the end of the evening!

Nice one. You can't beat a good winter wrecking trip. Those Pollock keep you nice and warm.
