Fish caught at mevagissey harbour

Hi folks. Me again.Well me & my son Bailey whent out fishing on the 19/1/08.Arrived at the harbour after the school run.At around 5 pm.Fished mid -water.Used 2 hook flapper rig with rag & squid. Not a lot of rod bending action. But managed a Y-ting & a pout. All count for the hunt.& it was a good couple of hours with the nipper. Then last night whent down again to the harbour.Got there at 5pm Set up a rotten bottom rig & fished the rocks next to the harbour a bit snaggy but looking for wrasse.Used rag for bait. After a few casts bang fish on but took me into the rocks & lost it.Baited up & cast out again whaited 10 mins then bang lost it again.Baited up again cast out waited 15 mins bang yes got the bugger.Ballan wrasse.Cast out again waited 10mins a lot of twitching of the rod then bang a nice little corkwing wrasse. It thad the dark spot at the tail.So very happy.Whent to the outer harbour & set up a 2 hook flapper with rag & squid. Not a lot happened for the first hour or so.Then tap, tap, tap. Nothing so baited up again same as before & cast out,& waited Tap after tap but nothing. Then tap a nice little Blenny very pleased. My first. So packed up at 8:45 pm & headed home.Pleased with the blenny. The pictures are not very good because the flash was not working, So had to used the truck headlights.Got it working now, so better pics next time. All the best marty.

Re: Fish caught at mevagissey harbour

Hi Silverfish.

Well done on some species for the hunt. However, I think you need to brush up on your fish ID if those pictures are from your trip.
First picture is a Rockling. Not possible to properly ID it but most likely a 5 or 3 bearded one. Certainly not a Blenny
Second and third pictures are of a Corkwing Wrasse. No Ballan Wrasse pictures there. Having lived on Portland for years, I would consider myself a Wrasse expert.
Fourth picture is possibly a Whiting, not 100% sure but I would give you it.
Fifth picture looks more like a Poor Cod, but not going to argue on it lol.

Re: Fish caught at mevagissey harbour

Hi Marty.

I wasn't trying to put you down mate. just trying to help.

I have been fishing all my life and one of my hobbies is fish ID. I don't get it right every time either, but through years of experience and hours of looking at books and websites I can ID 98% of European fish.
Just thought it might help when you come to claim more fish for the species hunt.

And trust me, just because I live in Spain it's no holiday. Crap wages, corruption everywhere and serious discrimination especially towards Brit's. Don't believe anything you see in programmes like living in the sun.
