Last minute Rescue

I prepared myself for a fishless weekend, after the wrecking trip was cancelled due to bad weather.

Lucky me, John (monkey nuts) took mercy on me and invited me out for a bit of fishing on his 'nutshell'.

So after meeting at Justins were we picked some bait up, we headed of to the Pontoon at Hamble where the 'nutshell' was waiting to be taken for a spin.

Soon John had manoeuvred the vessel to a secret spot (only secret because I haven't got a clue where we were lol) and in no time we were set up to have a dabble for anything that was stupid enough to take our bait.

We had no fancy rigs or rods....I fished with a spinning rod, an old baitrunner with 8lb line and a one up one down rig size 1 hook, rag for bait.

Second rod was my new boat rod with a multiplier, 30lb braid (had my gear packed for the wrecking, so didn't bother to re-pack), a pulley rig again size 1 hook, rag for bait.

There was no need to cast out, just an under arm swing to the spot we wanted to fish....within 3-5 mins I had my first bite....'Get in there'....I thought, until the fish came to surface :-0

My first catch....a snotty

I was not prepared to touch that snakey looking thing luckily it spat the hook and landed on Deck right next to my feet....I think I invented a new war dance there and then.
John's comment was 'don't you want to hold it for a picci'.....I think I answered him which sounded a bit like anglo saxon lol.

John was trying to catch a little pout, which he wanted to use as live bait for bass....but he caught alsorts (will let him tell the tail) but a pout.
Whilst John was busy lending a helping hand to another skipper, one of his rods had a couple of knocks, so I picked it up, a quick strike and to light came this little fellow

I think it's a Sand Goby...could be wrong though

For a while thinks were mad, we had lots of knocks but couldn't connect....John caught a few massive blennys, I couldn't believe the size of them.
I managed the first pout witch served John as a live bait for the bass (sadly he didn't catch one, crabs stripped the poor thing down to the bones).

Next time I manage to connect to a little black bream

Soon was followed by a Ballen Wrasse

Needless to say I was very chuffed with my catches, as they all were my first species.

Around 1.30-2.00pm thing went quiet, so John decided to set of to the pontoon in hamble to see if we can find a few bass.
We saw a few jumping and tried some spinning but soon had our wrist slapped as we weren't allowed to fish there.
So we returned to the home boat yard of the 'nutshell' to see if we could tempt a few mullet.

One of John mate asked if he should bait up for us....he went off and came back with a bin bag FULL of sandwiches...casts off the canteen....chicken tikka mesala, tuna mayo, cheese and onion, you name it and it went in as bait lol.

The schoolie bass were well impressed, so were the ducks but still no sign of any mullet.
I walked around the pontoon a bit when I spotted one, nice size, around the 4-5lb mark....so out came more bread and John baited up a few spot between various boats.

It took a while before John spotted 2 nice size mullet again, he called me over so I can have a go. We were freelining bread on a size 8 micro barbed carp hook.

Sadly the mullet got spooked by a few people who came back from a sailing trip and unloading the boat. But we weren't gonna give up....John kept on feeding the spot, leaving it for a while, went back, fed some more, called me over again to give it another go.
It was frustrating to see the fish sucking of the bait from your hook, leaving a bare hook. B****y teasing they were.
I wasn't going to give up, despite the rain setting in.....I was walking up and down the pontoon, fishing different spot and retuned to the spot again where the 2 mullet were still happily feeding.

John was great, he easily could have caught them but he didn't want to spook them off to give me a chance to catch one.

Anyway, third or fourth attempt I got lucky and managed this beauty, the biggest one of the two

My first mullet a 6lb 8oz beauty.

The highlight of the day....which we ended there.

A huge thank you to John for a fantastic day....I managed to get 4 new species thanks to him.
A great host (even let me have one of his beer) and a superb ghilly too.

Cracking Mullet Claudia. I'm glad to see you both had a good days fishing even though the wrecking trip was cancelled. I was dragged kicking & screaming to Ikea in Bristol by the missus to do a bit of shopping.....
