| An Easter fishing fest..... What a beautiful day. Sun shining very slight breeze, we pushed off from Penzance harbour looking to find a wreck for drifting and anchoring on when the tide slackened off. First though we needed some fresh bait and word was out that the mackerel shoals are in big time. We headed out round mousehole island onto a stretch of sand well known for mackies. Literally first drop and we were all pulling stringfuls and 30 minutes later, on our way to a wreck!! She lies 10 miles off and is fairly broken up but there were definite fish markings so we set up for a drift using jellys. Within a few minutes I was into a fish. Not very big but a good spirited fight. Then another until finally hooked into a better fish that stripped line a couple of times until I finally got it aboard. About 9 – 10lb. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...lockeaster.jpg A few more mackerel and Pollack later we anchored up and had a good variety of fish including Congers, pout, dogs and a haddock. The day came to an all too soon end and we were on our way back to port as we watched the sun go down. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...nseteaster.jpg Sunday morning. What a difference 12 hours make. A bit of an onshore SW was creating a chop on the water and we knew we were in for a more uncomfortable day. Went for mackerel first and it was exactly the same as the day before bagging up on our bait in 30 mins. Straight down to the sands we set up for long drifts using long flowing traces and fresh mackerel strips. On thew second drift something hid me really hard and put up a great fight, diving, bucking head shaking……….. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...er/gurnard.jpg The biggest gurnard I have ever caught and fantastic colours. This one went 2lb 10oz. Phil was next and had this greater weever also with fantastic colours. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...evereaster.jpg The weather was quite brisk so we ended up drifting for most of the day catching a variety of fish including cod, dogs, pouting, cuckoo’s, gurnard and Mel topped it off with a fine mackerel over 1lb 8oz. All too soon we drifted past logan one more time then headed back to port. A great weekend with some excellent fishing. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...oganeaster.jpg Tight lines. |

The british record came from the area we fish. Very good fight and they taste fantastic....although you have to be very careful when filleting as they can sting you even after death. I will be out a few times this year and will post some more reports. Funny thing is the skipper was out with his kids the week before and his 12 year old girl had a haddock weighing 7lb 2oz!!!!!!!!! an incredible fish!!!!! for Cornwall. There hasnt been one caught like that in over 40 years in our club. They have sent the pics to sea angler so hopefully will be in a future edition. Anyway cheers guys. ![]() |
