Newbie advise needed please HI all, as it says in the title, I am new to sea fishing and I have some questions which I hope you experienced guys can help me out with. 1. where are the best marks around the Pevensey Bay area? I have been fishing for a few weeks now, and not caught anything just yet, so I know I am doing something wrong, almost certain lol 2. What to fish for this time of year? I go in to 2 angling shops here in the area, and they both say different things, could they be both right though? One says, because the weather is stil warm the mackerel is still around, the other one says, fish for bass or/and cod, which one is true? Or are they all right in what they say? 3. Live bait or lures? Same angling shops again have different opinions, one says lures, the other one is in favour of real bait. What would you guys use? Thanks in advance for your replies Peter

Re: Newbie advise needed please Hi Peter, Like you, I've not been a member of this forum long, but one thing I can tell you is that you'll get some post replies from lads much more experienced and helpful than me. But I would say a couple of things; firstly, we are in a period of time when some of the summer fish are still about but the winter ones are still to show up in numbers. So that means that even though you may go out and target a particular species, you might be very surprised at what you actually catch. I went fishing yesterday afternoon in that hot, bright sun at Greenhithe on the Thames. I fished two rods; one out as far as I could cast (about 110 yards) and the other just under my feet in clear water. Bright sun? Clear shallow water near the bank? Not a chance you would think. I caught nothing on the rod cast well out but three schoolie bass right inshore. They weren't big (28 to 33 cms) but they were catches just the same. So, keep an open mind and don't despair - you'll catch 'em, just keep trying. I know that there are some forum members who fish nr Pevensey so I've no doubt they will advise you where to try. Kind regards.

Re: Newbie advise needed please lol, well even the aged and experienced anglers have been blanking or bitting for a while now, with the odd decent fish being caught, i like to treat this period as a time of ease, and use it as a time of practice/knowledge gathering, still nice to get out, try out different rigs/casting/venues etc. then when the fish do arrive, your in a good mental/physical state to catch. my mental state lasts about 1/2 a day, then its all down hill, my physical side will never help. ![]() keep trying it will all click into place soon. good luck __________________ good luck and tight lines chris lifes to short for animosity.

Re: Newbie advise needed please Mackerel are still plentiful. Had 9 beauties for bbq and bait in 30 mins Wednesday, yummy! Bass are plentiful too aint caught any monsters but lots of small ones and a pb 5lb 11oz who went back to his chums after a quick slap across my face as a rebuke for catching him. No Cod yet aint heard of any caught either. Had a my first ever Dog a few weeks back very pleased. I mostly use Rag, Lob, small whole squid, mackerel and squid cocktail. Caught a few Bass close in on a wedge but most fall to whole squid. I have used a few other lures but not caught anything! Feathers for mackerel is best I use a string of three that I've made myself they work great ;) Good luck with ya pier trip ;)

Re: Newbie advise needed please best results this time of year will be after dark .. large fish baits close in for bass or worm/crab/squid baits for decent whiting and the first of the codling .. I personally wouldnt bother with lures this time of year - ive had enough of mackerel ![]() __________________ Shore Species 2012: Dab-Flounder-Herring-L.S.Dogfish-Pouting-Shore Rockling-5 Bearded Rockling-Small Eyed Ray-Turbot-Whiting

small whiting upto around 8 inches are a good livebait for bass but not much cop cut up as bait other than for dogs who will eat about anything .. best just chuck em back Pete.. __________________ Shore Species 2012: Dab-Flounder-Herring-L.S.Dogfish-Pouting-Shore Rockling-5 Bearded Rockling-Small Eyed Ray-Turbot-Whiting |
