Highest biomass of bass in the Solent for 20 years. Trouble is a large proportion of 3 - 8lbs fish are being targeted by pro rod and line anglers (some are licensed). The migratory (larger fish) may make it to the SW approaches each Winter, where they are trawled up by tonnes at a time by French, Belgie, Channel Islands and Scottish Pairs. In the Solent there are plently of schoolies/chequers and fewer and fewer 5 - 10 lbers. The Minimum Size Limit is set by SSFDC for fish taken within 6 miles of Statutory Baselines at 36cm. (37.5cm in the Cornish Sea Fishing Committee area). This is an SFC Byelaw and includes trawlers, static nets, licensed rod and liners and recreational anglers from pier, wall or shore using rods or handlines. Commercial Minimum Landing Size Limits set by Defra/EU apply only to those landing fish for selling. There is no reason why the Environment Officer in Portsmouth (employed by the Sea Fisheries Committee, not EA) can't make regular checks on SPP; but he appears to choose not to! All you can do is badger and report offences the SSFDC at Poole on 01202 721373. They appear not to care too much; but the other enforcers care even less. Sad but true! ![]() All fish with an asterisk in the margin below are subject to the SSFDC Byelaws - ![]() I'm afraid the bottom line reference to the increase for bass to 40cm was just a little joke between Fisheries Ministers Ben Bradshaw and Jonathan Shaw. |

| Re: Undersized Bass being caught on South Parade Peir! Here's a curved ball to throw into the mix. We know that larger Cod lay more eggs (1 yr old 50,000 eggs. 5 year old 2,000,000 eggs) so the argument about size minimum vs maximum restrictions on commercial catches looks a bit shaky. Is the same true of Bass? The sea is one of those wonderous places that defies human understanding. It has been proved that fish lack the genes that allow degradation by aging for instance. Therefore, theoretically a fish could live forever and with each year produce more and more baby fish. Their ownly restriction is Darwin's Theory of evolution it seems. If it gets eaten at 1 year, no great loss. 50+ however? |

| Re: Undersized Bass being caught on South Parade Peir! My 13lbs odd bass had its scales read at Lowestoft and turned out to be 29 years old. My 18lbs beach cod was 5 years old. Cod rarely get to be able to live more than 8 years and it was estimated by CEFAS in 2006, a relatively huge breeding year, that 95% would have been caught at 35 - 45cm, had it not been for fisheries closures and quotas. I'm afraid Darwin is dead anyway. ![]() I just re-read your post ... 1 year old cod produce eggs ... yer kiddin' me? Cod reach maturity, in temperate waters, at about 50 centimetres (20 in) at about 3 to 4 years of age. Have I mis-read your post? |

| Re: Undersized Bass being caught on South Parade Peir! Comparing Two different species at their varying ages is not, I feel a valid indicator. I think the most important part of that post is the word 'Estimated' Whether it's by CEFAS or the Boy Scouts, we actually don't know for sure |
