Slapton...Fri 11th Aug

Friday 11th August 06
Well I finally decided where to fish…..Slapton (Strete Gate). I stopped at Blackpool Sands (6:00pm) but with the beach still heavily populated by holidaymakers decided Slapton would be better. More space and lots of it. The Red Bream of Blackpool will have to wait a while. Set up and fishing by about 7:00pm & still with 2 hours to go before high water.

There would’ve been a picture here but made a hash ‘uploading’ it (is that computer speak?)

I decided to have a play with the new toys (Zippy Primo Synchros….well it would’ve been rude not to). Lovely evening, both rods out (2 hook flappers baited with lug & rag) I’d only just sat down to enjoy a beer when one of the rod tips starts nodding….that’s no crab I thought, rod tip springs back straight & lines gone slack. Calmly placed just opened tin of beer on beach so’s not to spill any (I only had one can) pick up rod, wind in slack line….yessss fish on. Nice little Bass of about 2lb, hook out & off you go to get bigger, just keep clear of those pair trawlers. Re-bait & re cast. Sit down & drink can of beer, just finished can of beer when rod tip comes alive again…throw empty can of beer down, jump up, grab rod…bloody hell! I’m in again, another Bass, a bit smaller than the first, hook out & back you go. Re-bait & re cast, it’s now quarter past eight. Nod, nod……nod, nod, nod…..noddy nod nod nod, pick up rod , can feel fish kicking on t’other end…..yep he’s on. Another Bass, return fish, re-bait & recast. It’s now slack high water and the rod tips slow nodding tells me crabs are on the bait. Wind both rods in, yep! Bottom hook on both flappers gone leaving me with crimped line. New hooks on, re-bait and re cast. Tide starts to move a bit……darkness is falling. Did that tip move??? Nod, nod ,nod, yep sure did.
Pick up rod , wind in slack, yep fish on…..another small Bass. Remove hook & back it goes. It’s now 10:00pm & dark, the reflective tape on the rod tips glows white in the beam of a small maglite torch (I did try tip lights, the blue ones but they gave me a headache – very bright they were so went back to the trusted reflective tape + torch)

There should’ve been a picture here as well….must learn how to do it.

I didn’t get any more fish, not even a ‘bowser’ (dogfish) and packed up at 10:30pm.
Tried to take atmospheric photo of moon rising over horizon with long reflection on calm sea but failed – need a proper camera for that kind of shot.
I’m out again on Sunday evening (13th) – might try Blackpool Sands if it’s a bit quieter. Will let you know how it goes.
