Hayling lastnight

Well the sea looked good,a stiff southerly was blowing straight in our faces chopping the sea up and making it very "bassy"
I chucked two rods out one with worm on small hooks the other in close with a garfish section.
Rob caught a couple of schoolie bass and then the heavens oppened, great!
I had a small bass myself and a bream and then put both rods in close with big squid and garfish baits.
We d been there a couple of hours and things were very slow ,
things then suddenly hotted up.
I was stood talikng to Rob looking at my rods which were about20yrds away when out of nowhere there was an almight blinding flash near my rods,i thought i d gone blind whilst Robs hair standed on end and his pace make nearly blew its fuse.
A massive lightening bolt had landed not far from the other side of my rods, great, weve got 4 x 13 ft lengths of carbon and its lightening overhead.
Well we sh%t ourselfs and wouldnt touch our rods for ages untill the storm passed over, when i did build up courage to wind in i gingerly earthed my rods expecting to get electricuted at any time.
Back to the fishing and things were still slow with the odd small bass and bream ,i also got a small smutt.
At about midnight it started lightening again ,this time out at sea lighting up the horizon with huge impressive arcs of light.
This was all very entertaining except i kept thinking i was going to get blown up everytime i wound in ,and with the but of the rod stuck in my groin i kept getting visions of waking up lying on the beach looking down at whats left of my smouldering manhood .
My fear of electricity comes from my grandad and his spoons atatched to a car battery, cheers grandad
Anyway the fishing ,as said it was slow but as the tide began to ebb things slowly improved with small bass being pulled in quite regulary.
Atlast i got a good bite on the rod close in ,small squid on a 3/0 its got to be a biggy, wrong a 1lb bass .
Even small bass can take the biggest of baits.
The squid close in was now proving a big hit with the bass but none of any size, the biggest was about 2lb.
By the end of the night we had between us about 4 bream,i smutt and 15-20 bass all of which went back.
Quite a lot of fish but at the time it seemed a slow night and nothing of any great size.
Highlight of the night was Hayling roulette fishing, you know the one were you stand on a beach with a 13ft length of carbon in your hands during lightening, keeps you on edge

Re: Hayling lastnight

Think I have recovered - what a night ....
Althought it was slow for 8 hrs of fishing, I was pleased to catch over 10 fish and a nice bass (IMHO) at around 1lb. Had one Bream on that felt really good, got it to the surf to think - thats not very big ? I guess the weight of Johns line I had hooked as well fooled me
Caught my biggest Bass on Slipper Limpet at about 10 yards and a few really good bites but like the other night - no connection
Highlight has to be the storm - what an impressive display by Mrs Nature - the lightning out to sea lit up the sky (and I mean lit up the sky) from Selsey - IOW ... truly spectacular ...
New batteries in the pacemaker - Johns face was a picture whan that bolt hit (sorry John ) as as he says : All that lightning & wet 14' carbon rods - REAL team extreme

Talking Re: Hayling lastnight

Great report, lads!
You don't leave too much to the imagination.... feels like I was there!
Not sure about your Grandad, mate?
I know that 'young people today don't know they're born', but wiring yer danglies up to a Ford 8 battery has to have been a desperation move, even during the Blitz?

Well done on the catch.
