Barton on sea, 11/06/06

Squeezed in a short session Sunday eve.
Armed with one rod, sandeel on a Pompey rig, and casting 100yds into a nice springer, managed a Painted ( small-eyed ) of 4lb ish first drop during daylight... 9pm.
High water came and went, with no more action. Varied my distances, angles etc., without a sniff. Meanwhile the swell on the ebb had become quite mean, which ultimately cost me my 'second' fish, last cast at 120yds ish.

Really pleasant evening.

Re: Barton on sea, 11/06/06

Cuckoo;... a Pompey, or Gold's rig is a one up ( the longer ) snood, one down snood. The lower snood employs a Breakaway cascade swivel tied into it's length, into which clipps the upper snood.
I normally use an impact shield, though on occasion have used a Gemini ABC clip. Snood stretch is alleiviated ( spelling?) by a Gemini SRT spring under the upper snood's swivel.
Casts well. Best fished into some depth. Not too hot in turbulent water, tending to tangle. Think Rays, Doggies, etc. Think sandeel.
TIP. Keep top bait sensible size, so it hugs trace.
You'll see what I mean....

Thumbs up Re: Barton on sea, 11/06/06

Sounds like you had a good session. Well done on the Ray, never seen a live Painted Ray, only pictures. Are they common down your way?

Re: Barton on sea, 11/06/06

Common- ish!

Greenheart, as with many fish, set your stall out for a Painted/Small Eyed and they can be elusive.
Take the missus down the beach for a couple of hours and, 'Hey Presto'!, there they are!
If you are in the right place, at the right time, then there are some nice specimens to be had.
