Teignmouth Festival Fishing

From Friday 26th August to Thursday 1st September, Teignmouth Sea Angling Society held there annual 6 day festival. This year i had to work hard to get enough brownie points to enable me to fish each day. this is how each day turned out.

Friday 26th August
The first day, i needed to target the scad. Fished on teignmouth fish quay and caught tonnes of fish. scad, pollock, mullet and mackerel came in one after another and strangely a whiting. With only the scad being big enough to weigh in it provided me with a basis to build upon. I have had scad to 1lb 6oz from the quay so it was a question of fishing through the small fish til i had one around the pound mark.

Saturday 27th August
I woke up at 5am, and strolled down to the fish quay where i had groundbaited hoping for the mullet. One was weighed in 5lb 11oz. so i needed a big fish to get anywhere. It was a slow start but the smaller ones started feeding and then a few around the 3lb mark started to show. 8 am came quickly and aboard the family boat i went. we headed to a rough ground mark 6 miles from teignmouth, on this mark i had pout to 2.5lbs, cuckoo wrasse to 1lb, congers upto 20lb, mackerel to 1.6lbs. Nothing big enough to keep but alot of species turned up.

After the weigh in, i had the choice for a long tiring walk to the huss marks down off dartmouth, i really couldnt be bothered so i decided to try for the silver eel in the teign. I had one bite in 2hrs and caught one smaller than my shoe lace.

Sunday 28th August
The weather was so nice, my dad and i decided to go to a new mark on the boat. 9 miles later we found this giant drop off from 60ft to 130ft, within minutes the anchor was in and the baits were in the water. I didnt know what to expect, but i had 2 bites and 2 fish. One was a conger between 20lb and 30lb and the other was a pb bull huss, which weighed 13lbs 7oz. This huss put me first for the time being and also broke the club record which had been standing since 1973 so i was quite pleased.

Monday 29th August
My family booked a trip aboard the atlantis in teignmouth and i decided i couldnt go. The boat anchored a wreck and had, ling, conger, pollock, pout, lsd, black bream to 3.5lb and a few red bream which were returned alive. It was nice to see some bream being caught. 2 mins later a junior and his family fished aboard dalora and recorded a huge bream of 5lbs 4 oz. what a loverly fish, it was huge just like the little kids smile.

Tuesday 30th August
A trip to brixham breakwater was on the cards for the mullet and wrasse. First cast was a hardback crab intended for the big ballans but after a tussle and nearly losing my rod straight off the wall, in came a bass to 3.5lbs. All day i was groundbaiting for the mullet, and not one was seen all day. All i caught was gars and mackerel.

At the weigh in, the atlantis went out and caught 15 bream all between 3 and 4 lbs, which consequently knocked my huss off the top.

Wednesday 31st August
A day spent looking for flounders in the teign, there were 4 of us trying various lower reach marks. all day without a bite. A bit of a dissapointment.

Thursday 1st september
I needed a flattie from the shore so i headed to hopes nose. When i got down there i found most of the club went down there after dabs, red mullet and black bream as there was one of 2lbs11oz caight the day before.

I caught one baby ballan wrasse and not one touch out deep. i decdied to try in towards the bay, all i caught here was a dragonet, poor cod, pollock, a bull head, and a blenny. at least i had some fun with the gars and the mack on float when i could get a chance with all the tinsel chuckers about.

There were some nice fish caught with the best fish boat being the bream of 4lb 4oz by senior and 5lb 4oz by junior, the best fish shore was also a bream of 2lbs 11oz. I decided it couldnt be bad being beaten by fish of this qual
