messing about by the river

just been up the river for acouple of hours spinning with a dexter wedge, weed was a problem and it was low tide (didnt wear wellys, big mistake!)
i worked quite a large stretch of the ricer and had quite afew follows from fish of around the 2lb mark and afew little plucks
just as i was lossing faith in the fact that bass eat fish fish i had something bigger follow, which took the lure right at the bank!
my heart was thumping and the fish looked around the 4lb mark, it really was great on a very light spinning rod, but then slack
my leader knot was rubish and snapped! well gutted
will try again later on in the week though

Hi Ben,
Shame about that, but

"Better to have fought and lost than never fought at all"

Was it a braid to mono leader? Because if it was, there are special knots to use otherwise the braid will cut thru the nylon.

Hi Ben,

Unfortunately we lost a few big bass with various, including 'special' knots, until we found this UNI - KNOT

It's not a fancy knot! I'm sure you'll follow the diags OK, but you're basically only laying the lines side by side and tying two sets of overhand knots. I think why it works so well (apart from being simple to tie) is that when you pull the two knots together and tighten (spit on the lines first to lubricate and reduce overheating), you will see that the lines main pressure is knot against knot. This, reduces any tendency for the braid to cut the mono etc.

It's a real good knot and worth doing. Stay with braid and a fluorocarbon leader - you'll get those big bass

Good luck - Jack

Unlucky Ben. Great watching fish follow lures though, love it! Only ever had pike, perch and trout do it though...never sea species
