Salcombe Estuary - Sunday After seeing the forecast, we decided to call off the planned boat trip off the skerries and instead head for a bit of shelter. The only place we thought could produce a fish or two was salcombe, the mark i will keep a secret but its a place me and my dad have been trying for 6 years to land a gilthead bream. On this occasion my old man took his bit of stuff with him. Finally after walking 2 miles we got to the river, withing 10 mins, my dads girlfriend had a screaming bite and in came a 3 1/2lb gilthead. This really got on my nerves, not only have i been trying to catch one of these she comes along and catches one within 10 mins. The cast after she had yet another one of 4 1/2lbs, and straight after yet another just a touch under 6lbs It was really nice to see these fish after thinking that we were fishing the wrong mark for a few years. Talk about beginners luck!! I had one bite all day, but at least i can claim some points, all i had was this thornback which weighed about 5 - 6 lbs, glad to say it went back unharmed to fight another day. all in all it was a really good days fishing, out of the wind and in between the rain i really enjoyed myself, and maybe next time i could get at least a run off of these gilthead bream. __________________ Nothing grows faster than a fish from when it bites until it gets away.

Re: Salcombe Estuary - Sunday I have been trying for years for both these fish. recently i have started to catch the thornies, particularly from salcombe using peeler crab. but as for the giltheads maybe next time. The gilthead bream and couches bream have started to make an appearance around the coast especially since 1998. i have heard of them caught through a range of estuaries, and it seems like they do like estuaries especially at slack water. __________________ Nothing grows faster than a fish from when it bites until it gets away.

Well done Luke nice Thornback. Great looking Gilthead. They have been very rare for a time and are now making a comeback in certain areas of the Country. I have been visiting Salcombe with a pal of mine for 4 years and I have witnessed him land some very BIG Giltheads indeed, all from a boat. They have the nasty habit of biting through your line with the greatest of ease due to the fact that they have very tough tooth like plates in the front of the mouth and massive ones at the rear. I have not caught one yet but I keep my hopes up that one day before I pop off, I will Hook a 4lb plus Gilthead! I keep my hopes up............................. ![]()
