Whiting Portsmouth or Southampton Friday Evening

I wondered if anyone can help with a few questions.

I'm looking for a spot in the portsmouth or southampton areas to catch a few whiting.

I don't have big beach casters as I usually fish from piers/boats in the summer.

I was thinking of going this friday late afternoon/evening and wondered what is the best rig? bait? how far to cast? or what depth from a pier? and if using the fluerescent "whiting rig" bought in a tackle shop is the way to go?

I'm hoping someone can give specific advice on either town Quay southampton or southsea front.

Thank you

Damian

2 hook flapper with squid or mackerel strips has always worked on town quay for me. and rag worm will open the door to sole, flounder and the odd plaice. night time defo fishes better but its chav's vill with dick head boy racers.
good luck

just lob it out, no real distance needed. but the bigger bass are under your feet with live pout or whiting.
i used to use a spinning rod and a carp rod. so no big power casts were needed. iv seen people catch at all ranges there

The quay is fine but don't expect any whiting bigger than about 6-8 ounce. loads of pout at the minute too..
dirty squid, mackerel, lug and sandeel for less pout - ragworm for more of them plus poor cod.
south parade pier would be my bet or even millenium pier gosport .

thanks so much for the advice,

should i just free line for the bass or present the live bait on the bottom?

and finally (i promise) which size hooks for the whiting?

thanks again

live bait on a portland rig just off the bottom with just enough lead to keep it from swimming off. fish at the entrance end of the quay car park just as it starts to ramp down , this is where most of the bass come from
size 1 is fine for a small fish bait .

thanks, i fish south parade pier quite a lot in the summer (one of the few to put undersize bass back), so i know it well but have never fished there in the winter.

would you suggest dropping down in the bay area or casting from the wooden section at the end?

cheers

wooden section might get you more whiting and prolly a woofer or two.. middle section and you may well snag a bass to mate.. good luck wherever you end up
