In The Rough! Part 2

Thought i,d have another bash at it today after yesterday's conger fiasco. Dug out the last of last years mackie and some stinky refrozen squid from the depths of the freezer to see if i could temp a wee eel out again.
Got to the mark about 1.30pm and decided to get all the gear set out ready this time gaff,camera and so on.
Whole stinky squid and a mackie head ready to go.



Was a dead cert nothing was going to happen straight away since i was well prepared this time.

Had a few small rattles but nothing worth getting excited about, changed one of the rods to a smaller rig and small section of mackie to try for rockling and had this small 3 beard to beat the dreaded blank.



Tide's pushing nicely now with very little swell and no wind, rebaited with another stinky squid and a small mackie offering to see if there's any more bigger rockling.
Sat back to enjoy a smoke with no bugger around for miles to disturb my peaceful day on the rocks.
Only around an hour til dusk now and i,m chillin right out then a small tap tap on the squid, rod tip bends round a bit and stays there so i,m thinking give it a few minutes. Must have sat like that for over 5 minutes then that sweet music of a nice steady stream of line peeling off the slosh.
Picked the rod up and lifted into the fish which came cleanly off the rough ground, what a result!
Could feel the fish nodding a bit but nothing to violent, to big for a doggie so it's got to be a huss. Got him underneath my feet and decided to handline him up rather than use the gaff.
A fine fish of almost 9lb (8lb 14oz to be exact), love these fish with that mean look on there face.


A nice end to a very mild January afternoon, and to think i almost went down the harbour to feed more worms to the side steppers lol.

Always very dark off these marks Dave, must be the heavy kelp i think.

Thanks for the replies guys, rig wallet has took a battering over the last two days so if i go for part 3 tomorrow i'l have to make them up as i fish lol. Luckily they are only basic rigs 1 swivel and 1 hook with the rotten bottom tied off the swivel.
