Newlyn Pier 7/1/12

I got talked into going after flounder at Newlyn old quay today by my mate instead of hoofing it in the dark tonight to a rough ground mark. Hopes were high as we had plenty prime ragworm.

HT around 4pm we would fish the last 2hrs up and 1hr down, conditions looked really good with very little wind and no rain for a change.

Two rods each set up and we were ready for action, well due to the lack of frost it wasnt long before the onslaught of side steppers started.
Every bait stripped to the bare hook might aswell have tipped the bait tray over the harbour wall and be done with it lol.
I had the great idea of trying a bit of plugging with my trusty Sammy and he never let me down, only thing was i didnt quite expect this wee fellow to come out of the depths and hit the lure.

Luckily for him only one hook had caught his wing and i had my extending landing net to scoop him out the water rather than drag him up the wall.
Hook taken out and off he went looking even more annoyed than me by this point
We decided it was almost time to call it a day but would have one more cast, my mate turns round to sit his rod down and tripped over a rope kicking my rod rest straight in the drink luckily the rods were out the water at the time. 20 minutes later he managed to hook it with an old conger trace i had in the boot of the car.
Time to go home for a beer i think
Cant wait to get back out tomorrow, never a dull moment in fishing

Do you get bonus point in the species hunt for the bird?? Lol

Sounds like a very eventful trip, shame the fish didn`t show but at least you got out and wet a line

Regards

Joe

It's not on the list Joe but i think it deserves an extra point for catch and release .
Had a few near misses with the flying rats too.
Wont be plugging there again!

Unlucky Steve , the sideways bait munchers are still inshore in numbers heretoo ,giving the same result ,no fish unless you land your bait right infront of one .

Nice one Steve, Better luck with the flounder next time.
My mate at work lives down your way, he said the seaguls quite often swoop down and rob food off people. He told me he had a steak and stilton pasty grabbed out of his hand at St Ives once. Lucky it wasnt a cornish pasty robbing shite hawk, might of taken off with your gear!
All the best.
Jason

Baits dont last much more than 5 or 10 minutes if your lucky, back to rough grounding for a bit til we get a frost or two. Hate feeding good bait to those little buggers .

Not so bad with the shite hawks at least you can see them coming but that wee chap came out the depths like a rocket, no chance of avoiding it but at least he was set free with only a small nick in his wing
