Dovers Eastern Arm 31st oct 11

I decided to fish the Eastern Arm last night. I haven’t managed to get out much lately so thought I should make time and go in the evening. I arrived at about 9pm hw 0200.
I had high hopes of a Bass or cod but all I could manage was pouting down the wall and dogfish if I cast out.
I used two beach rods with 4/0 pulley rigs with dirty squid and lug and mackerel flapper and mackerel fillets.
I used a bass rod with a 1/0 2 hook flapper as well. I caught most of the pouting on that rod.
It was hard work from the word go. There were too many pouting to catch anything else. As soon as the bait was in the water there was a fish on.
A seagull flew into my line, I thought it was a big bite and got excited. When I started to reel in I thought it was light. I looked over the side and see the gull tangled in my line by its wing. I managed to get it on the pier and cut it free. I was gutted as I lost my trace and cut the braid in the middle of my reel. Oh well. It wasn’t a big shitehawk it was smaller and whiter, it looked cute so I did the kind thing.
I started to pack up after that. I kept 5 large pouting in the end. I like fresh pouting. Its good eating! So all’s well that ends well. I left the arm at about 1245. I see my birthday in on the pier fishing!
It was a nice touch fishing out the boot of the car and driving home instead of lasing everything to my push bike and cycling.

All the best.
Jason

Re: Dovers Eastern Arm 31st oct 11

Catching pouting is a bit of a rarety these days Jason!!! I only managed about 3 all year lol. Im obviously fishing the wrong spots. I caught a gull once on the addy, I was baiting up on the wall and got distracted when it took my squid bait of the wall & tried flying off!!!! It was like having a wild kite for a few seconds with me freelining like mad not knowing what to do, it soon let go and flew off ok but it certainly got the heart going a bit

Happy birthday mate, all the best

Joe

Those pout look a decent size Jason, dont catch many on the marks i fish. Same as Joe only a handful each year.
Fishing from the car and driving home must have felt great instead jumping on your bike.
Happy belated birthday mate!
