Red face An eventful night at Pevensey Bay 12 Oct

Hi all,

Being a newbie, I thought I would contribute last nights out here. It was an eventful night,
and some of you will laugh there socks off (even I did lol)

I had the idea for a change to fish the complete tide in, instead of 2 hours in and 2 hours out.
Arrived at the beach, and the tide was really out, so that was a good start

Set up the first rod, cast out and not 5 minutes later caught the first Whiting of the night, nothing new there then.
Got it of the hook and put it back, re-baited cast out again and 10 minutes later my rod almost got pulled of the tripod!!!
Now this could not be a Whiting, could it? Remember, I am a newbie, and half of the time I have not got a clue what I am doing lol

No this was not Whiting, this was a proper Bass!
Anyway after a good old scrap of about 5 or 6 minutes I got him in the surf and did he start slashing about!
Luckily there were 3 guys digging for worms, and they gave me a hand getting the Bass out on the dry.
(if any of you guys are on here, thank you very much for helping me )

Remember, I am not even fishing for half an hour now, but after the struggle with the Bass, I finally look around
and guess what?? I am flippin cut off, and have got no wellies on, as I ripped them the day before on the shingle digging for worms ! B*ll*x !
So what to do now? Well here I am, 2 rods, seatbox, tripod, bucket full of worms and a carrier bag with warm clothing for the night
(did I say warm? hm, wet more like it effing well was)

So nothing to do than to wade through the water 3 times in my track bottoms, and trainers, and of course in the middle the water was waist high
Lucky enough, I only live literally 1 minute from where I go fishing, so a quick call to the wife, and 5 minutes later I was dry with another pair of track bottoms and trainers

The rest of the night was quite calm, I fished til about 2:30am (from 7pm) and caught another 8 whitings, and lost one big fish as I was reeling him in.
Don't know what it was, but I know it was big lol.

Anyway, here are the pics. The first one was taken with the Bass stil very much alive, so was not an easy job, fish in one hand, mobile in the other lol.

Here the Bass is again after my wife took it home. btw, the cutting board is 52cm wide ( 20.5 inch )

That's a really nice report Peter, and I'm delighted you caught! I think if we are honest we will all admit to being totally focused when playing a good fish and oblivious of our surroundings. And that is partly why, after the excitement of landing that bass, you suddenly found yourself 'cut off'. If you'd been at a different location where the tide flows even faster, and the gulleys are deeper, it might have been a different story! It don't bear thinking about. Not only is your report a good one, but it makes us all just stop and remember how dangerous things can suddenly become. If you read previous threads you will see that a lot of members are always concerned when they hear of mishaps on the shore. Please don't think I'm lecturing - I'm just pleased the outcome was a good one and that you live so close to the shore. Kindest regards. John R.

Nice Bass! Well done.
Sounds like it was an eventful one. I can't believe you stuck it out even after being stranded and soaked. Thats dedication.
All the best.

Nice fish Peter!!!! A for getting wet, a lesson learnt!!! I got cut of from the shore once and I absolutly sh*t myself for a few mins whilst I was scrambling across the top of rocks to try and get to safety, once your heart has been racing like that you always remember from that point on!!

Hi Chris, Lucky that happened at around 8pm so quite early on in the evening.

And Joe, yep once you think "Oh F**k" you do think twice, so ordered myself some waders today, the wife didn't even object to it, so everything has got it's purpose lol
But on a serious note, I will look around twice in the future though.

Thanks for the replies guys
