spinning around portland on the 10th Hey people. Ive got a day pass from the mrs to go fishing all day on the 10th of sept (you really dont wanna know what ive had to agree too! Lol)..... Anyways ive just bought a rovex lure pro quad and thought this would be an ideal time to test it out. The plan is to leave early in the morning and try to get round a few marks on portland and hopfully catch some fish..... However .... I dont really know the area as well as I could so really need some info from the locals if there are any here? The things I need to know are as follows. Good marks to try and at what state of the tide produces What species are about What lures to use (barring in mind that my rod has a 20-40g c/w) And probably the most important is tide times We plan to leave portsmouth at around 4 am and leave portland at around 8 pm. Any info would be really grateful! Thanx in advance! Mark

Re: spinning around portland on the 10th Well the stage is set for tomorrow, the plans have been made (all be it loosely) going to be trying 3 seperate marks for bass, pollack and wrasse. We will be leaving portsmouth at 4 am to hopfully be fishing before high tide at 6.30, the 1st stop off will probably be church ope cove to deep spin jelly eels and shads from the rocks as the tide moves out. The second place on our agenda is redcliffe bay, we hope to be there to get the first of the flood upto around mid tide and cover as much ground as we can with surface plugs and shallow divers in the hope of finding bass. From there we will head to the ferry bridge/fleet to again use surface plugs and shallow divers up to high tide and the first hour of the ebb in the evening. Well thats the plan anyways lol just hoping that the weather is kind and the fish are biting.

Re: spinning around portland on the 10th Thanks lads, really looking forward to it, ive never been spinning or plugging properly before (caught plently of mackerel and the odd bass whilst feathering but its not the same as actively hunting for the fish) do any of you guys know the marks ive listed well enough to divulge a few tips?

Re: spinning around portland on the 10th Me too! Lol, we are giving the bill a wide berth this time which is a shame but a force 4-5 s/westerly on those rocks wouldnt be a good.idea :-( the ferrybridge part of the fleet should be fairly shelterd by the shingle if chesil and church ope cove should also be shelterd to a certain extent so by rights the only time we should be casting into the wind is when we go to redcliffe

Re: spinning around portland on the 10th Well what can I say? We arived at the ferry bridge at 5.30 got set up and we were fishing by 6, we chucked everything into the water, spinners, wedges, shallow divers, poppers. We fished hard untill low tide (11.20) then went back to the car (fishless) to have a cuppa and something to eat. We had a chat and decided to give church ope cove a bash and planned to be there as the tide turned. I really like church ope, it really is a beautiful place to fish. When we arived we had the beach and rocks to oir selves so we set about clambering across the rocks to the right to try and find a suitable platform to spin from, unfortunately the kelp and wrack was far too dense to fish effectively and bob lost 5 jelly worms in 5 casts and decided to go back to the beach to try his lucky there, I stuck it out on the rocks for another half an hour or so because I was fishing my worms weedless but still managed to loose a couple to snags. When I climbed back over the rocks to my suprise there was a bikini clad blonde sprawled across the rocks having a photo shoot done! I made my apologies as I cut infront of them, taking in the "scenery" as I went ;-) I joined bob back on the beach were he was spinning with frozen sand eels. I tryed some jellies again and a dexters but again it was all in vein. We stuck it out for a couple of hours and again returned to the car without having caught anything. Next we had a look at freshwater cove but decided against the cliff climbing to get down to the water and headed to chesil cove. By this time it was around mid tide, the wind was right in our faces so we could only really use dexter wedges we coverd the beach from the rocks to the pub and then back again but still no fish! When we got back to the car we decided to give the ferry bridge another go so back we went again we tryed everything we could think of but we just couldnt find any fish at all. We ended up leaving at around 8 pm, tierd, aching and a bit dejected but we both said it was better than being stuck indoors all day so wasnt so bad after all lol
