Tq 16/8/11

With sole and bass the targets I opted for an easy session on town quay last night fishing from low to high. I had worm baits on the 2 beachcasters and a big mackerel bait on my boat rod straight down the side. Deanthedude popped down for a chat and as we listened to the mighty Saints tearing Ipswich a new one I had my first bite. I let it develop before bringing in one of my targets, a slip sole.

It was still not fully dark and this gave me hopes of a sole filled night. As darkness fell the breeze died to nothing and a bright moon appeared, things got very slow. Only the odd tiny rattle from very small fish. I had to wait a while before my next proper bite and it was a proper one! I'd hit one out further into the ferry channel as there was a bit of room due to people packing up. Bit of slack, which tightened up, then more slack before a pull-down which kept going.

Only one thing this can be then and I was forced to give it line. There was nobody else around except a few packing up at the far end so I had to get the dropnet ready myself. I walked it up the quay a little so I had plenty of quay to climb over the railings onto. Got it in a bit closer then realised it had crossed my other line so I had to do a bit of knitting before lowering the drop-net myself. I could now see a decent hound which luckily had wrapped in the rig which made netting easier. Weighed in at smack on 11lb.

I only had a bath shark and a little pout after this so it was quiet apart from the big gummy shark and some weirdo that wandered the quay all night armed with a carrier bag like Angelos Epithemiou from shooting stars! At high the water was alive with tiny fish in the surface. Nothing was bothering them until I was packed up and heard splashing. A small shoal of mackerel had showed up and were feeding on them.
