Talking Town Quay 15th August 2011

Decided to get out the house and head for a little session on the quay and arrived to find it pretty busy all the way along ..Reversed the car in between a family of hillbillys and a couple of older chaps and proceeded to chuck out a sandeel / mackie wrap on one rod and black lug on the other ..
I have to point out i wasn't expecting much action as the only bait that works 99% of the time here is fresh ragworm ..

Anyways,
Said Hillbillies packed up when the rain started and handed me about a dozen nice rag and after the chinese guys with 30 rods had packed up i went over to the bin to reclaim the tub of ragworm that they had simply placed in the bin -

Fishing wise , there was a commotion to my right and looking at the bend on the rod i was convinced there was a smutt on the end so walked over to find Mr Annelli on one end of the rod and a smutt of around 7-8lb on the other - hooked on his sole rig , tiny kamasans and ragworm and 18lb mono right through ..
After climbing over ( none of us had brought a drop net ) i did my best to coerse the fish from the depths but it weighed a bloody ton and the hooklength gave way as it went mental over the edge !
Me and Mark stood there half in shock - half in amazement at the stupid fish taking the wrong bait on the wrong rod .
He then proceeded to try and snag me a live bait in the form of a pout or whiting and soon after a double shot came in ..... consisting of a slip sole and an eel - no friggin use !.. A couple of small schoolies completed his session and he grudgingly headed home with his pal at midnight ..
I was struggling to get a bite and deployed some decent sized rag baits out towards the channel and the tiniest of tip rattles saw me curious enough t give the reel a few turns and when i felt the weight i thought small smutt pup or baby flattie .
Right untill my shockleader reached the edge the fish stayed really deep and kicked like buggery but i was soon hauling up a lovely sole of 1 lb 12 oz and blank saved - again on someone elses worms ( im getting good at this on T.Q )
After walking up and down looking for two AA batteries and chatting to one of the younger regulars i just couldnt get a damn picture so had to take one today before the fish met its fate unde the grill .

So . for you boys heading out there this weekend i would give the following advice -
most fish came within 30 foot of the pier and all fell to rag baits ..
plenty of sole about - mostly slips but the odd good specimen in between .
School bass everywhere - no smelt,no pout or whiting to be seen as was expected ..
Silver eels present as normal this time of year .
some decent smutt action still to be expected but a live bait over the edge is still the best bet to snare one of the big resident bass from under your feet

( pic to follow )

Steve

yep tripod and silver motor lol

you need to use small worm baits and try to hook a pouting or small whiting 6-8 inches long and hook it through the mush so the point comes out the top ..
Im going down again tonite with a few other boys if you can get out the house

Steve
