A few more sessions....

My new Leeda 10ft spinning rod had arrived and needed christening. I also like these rods for mullet fishing so it was off after the grey ghosts. It was a cloudy day and not many fish were in sight. I kept looking for them and saw a shoal of 3 in the shallows, 2 of which looked half decent. I got them feeding after a while then put a bait in after them. The second biggest approached the bread had a nibble before sucking it in, struck and fish on!

It put up a great fight in the very shallow water and I jumped over the wall to get down ready to net it. The fight had attracted a few holiday makers who helped me bring the fish up for weighing and photos. I climbed up over the wall, ripping my shorts in the process! An old boy volunteered to photograph it for me but once the fish was returned this is what I had.....

A photo of his wife's handbag! Luckily another woman had taken her own photo and emailed it to me yesterday. The fish went 4lb 4oz, rod christened and a new PB.

I moved again and spent a few hours feeding swims and swan dodging. The fish were feeding deep and I did miss a couple of bites. As the tide started to ebb the fish came up in the water and I connected with a good fish. It put up a great scrap and it was a real battle to keep it from going under the boats. In the end I put to much strain on trying to stop it and the hook pulled, fish was probably in the 5lb bracket.

On the night of the 23rd I couldn't decide where to fish and for some reason went to Southbourne despite not really rating it there. I was mainly to target sole but also bought sandeel and mackerel to have a play around. Things were painfully slow for me and others. Whilst baiting up I caught sight of a bite out of the corner of my eye, it was on rag just past the surf. I let it have a bit of time and a few more pulls showed. Soon had my target on the beach, only a slip but the first this year.

About an hour later I had my second bite of the night, lots of little rattles before a half decent pull and a breakout. This time a little thornback was the culprit.

On the 25th I managed to get a last minute day off and as it was a nice day and the tides were right I made the long walk to Hurst for another bream session. It was very busy up the end, mostly mackie bashers who did well in the early flood in the rough water over the sand-bars. I saw plenty of them coming out but they did thin out as the flood progressed.

As for me it was unusually slow on the bream front and they only came on the feed for about 10 minutes right at the top of the tide. I only managed the one of about a pound, I also had a nice garfish on the lure and a couple of little bonuses from a species point of view.
