Chesil last night! 13/14 -07-11

Hi chaps, went down to the south coast last night in search of bass and what ever else might happen along really.

Started off by feathering out some mackeral which went straight on to the live bait rigs - paternosters with the lead link attached to a zipp slider coupled with a 4 foot lead link.
My mate Phil Maggs turned up and fished to the left of me and gave me a master class tutorial in catching mackie the easy way using pop ups on a two two hook flapper set up, much easier when there arent that many about, he caught a dozen at least when Istruggled to catch 4 on the feathers.

I didnt have to wait long before one of my emblems was singing out a belting take which I hit immediately and the 3 1/4lb test curve carp rod from the boot sale did a wonderful job of absorbing the lunges of a very fish! It made a couple of short runs right and left but I was nt in the mood to play it out for too long and risk losing it and at the earliest opportunity I backed my way up the shingle bank pulling the fish clear of the water, at which point I darted down toward the water and grabbed it and the battle was won!

Weighed it and it went 5lb 1oz. Happy Happy!!

I decided to feather out another live bait and 5 mins later both carp rods were primed and ready and within 10 minutes I had another take on the other rod this time, a short burst of line coming off of the reel and then a slack line which I wound down on and hit. A short but spirited fight ensued and within a couple of minutes another bass lay before me, didnt have to unhook this one as the hooks fell out on the beach. This fish was smaller and went 2lb10 oz.
I was out of livies at this point and it was too dark to feather infact it was pitch black and I decided that when I got home I'd be tying up some pop ups, so I put on a dead bait and sat back and waited and 20 minutes later I had another run but this one was dropped - bugger!
An hour or so later the other rod, that still had a livie on screamed off, happy days, I wound down and pulled the rod up until I could feel the fish pulling the tip downwards and then I swept the rod back in a short arc and it was game on again. 2 minutes later I was holding another near 3lb fish, this went 2lb 14oz not massive but welcome all the same!
Decided to put the long rod out with a 3 hook flapper and small squid a worm baits in order to provide some pout for live bait which it did but as it turned out there werent any more bass about who were prepared to play ball but I did manage a couple of small ray on the flapper rig which I think are spotteds, perhaps someone can say "yay or nay" on that one?
It all went quiet after that and as the tide was coming back up I started to lose hooks to the dreaded spiders and at 0200 I decided that I really needed to go home for a shower and a much needed sleep.

All in all a great trip, caught the target x3 and possibly caught my first spotted ray as well as learning a new (to me technique) of catching macky.

Cant wait for the next trip.

Re: Chesil last night! 13/14 -07-11

Yeah I had a look at them earlier and compared them to some previous catch report pix, they are spotted ray for sure.
