| Well, where do I start!? I was picked up at 4.45am by Drew (Tasmanian Jim). We met his 3 fishing buddies in the car park in Portsmouth at about 6.30 and met up with the other anglers booked on the boat - it was an individuals day and 12 people were fishing, a large number, but the boat was a very big catamaran and space was no problem. We were on the boat for 7am, all 5 of us ready for a great day wrecking, hopefull that we would get a bagfull of pollack, how wrong could 5 people be............... By about 9.15am we were fishing wrecks approximately 38m out. Nothing for the first few drifts, nothing for the next few drifts, nothing for the next few wrecks, nothing, nothing, nothing! So, 2pm, the skipper, who admittedly had done a great deal to try to get us among the fish, decided that it was time to anchor and hopefully pick up a conger or two. So we flung on 2lb weights, yes it took 2lb of lead to hold bottom, and hoped for a conger. Now, I had fished the morning HARD; I didn't miss a drift I tried 7 or 8 lures, I varied my trace length, but caught NOTHING, not even a peck - In fact notone of the 12 anglers had so much as a sniff. Anyway, I flung 1/2 a macky on an 8/0 with a wire trace and lobbed it over the side. 5 mins later a chap fishing at the back of the boat had what he though may be a fish - after a fair struggle (2lb of lead and a very strong tide) he brought up a nice bull huss, nearing the 10lb mark. Then it happened, I couldn't believe it, my rod tip started severly nodding - I left it a few seconds and then tightened up, felt a fish on and lifted into it. It immediately let me know it wasn't happy and took some line. No mental head shakes so I didn't think it was a conger, I was almost calling it as another decent huss, but thankfully didn't. 10 minutes of hauling later (I really need to start going to the gym) I pulled out 1 of only 3 fish caught on the day. When it was near the surface someone shouted "it's a cod", when I saw it's head, I shouted "it's a cod", but then it showed it body and the skipper said "No, it's a ling", and it was. The skipper weighed it at just over 20lb and I was delighted. ![]() Shortly after this a 2nd huss was boated but it was just a baby and returned like the first one. Not a great day's fishing but that one fish made the day for me. I've taken a picture and Richard will post it shortly. Big shout to Drew and his friends who put me in touch with the skipper, I'm just sorry that they didn't catch. And John Marshall you were bang on with your prediction that the pollack wouldn't be on the wrecks this weekend - let's hope they are there next weekend as I'm wrecking on Saturday with Steve Porter, skipper of True Blue II __________________ ><((((((*> ><((((((*> ><((((((*> trailer cleaning |
