Kayaking tips

Hi All,

Bit bored at work so I thouht I'd share with you what I have learnt about kayak fishing.

Firstly. You do need to be quite fit. Dodgy knees and backs will suffer. Choose a kayak that you can lift on to your car. Mine is a Nomad Fealfree which is perfect (check out kayaks and paddles)

Saftey - if you dont live near the sea you need to check wave hieght on Magic Seaweed. Dont bother going out if waves are more than 2 foot. You also need a wetsuit, life jacket, paddle leash and mobile phone. Practice falling of and getting back your kayak. It is acually quite hard to pull yourself back on. This is why its better to go with someone else.

I have only fished with lures. My method is simple. Set a light clutch on your real. Then troll two plugs around over rocks, kelp beds and anywhere that looks promising. If I catch something I may have located a hotspot for fish. Next time I go out I will drift quietly into this area, put the paddle down and begin casting. Casting gives you an oppotunity to try out different lures. Large dexters are great when realed if fast. Also sidewindwer sand eels. Remember, when trolling you want a lure that shallow dives. Otherwise you will get snaggs. The best one I have found is the Husky Jerk (firetiger). It will float but will dive to 8 foot (monster tackle or veals are excellent for lures). I use 9 foot spinning rods with rubber handles that fit nicely in the rod holders. Avoid braid line because you can get in some terrible tangles with the other rod. I also use expenseive flurocabon running up to the lure so the line is invisable. Remember to take a preist. Larger Bass, thrashing about with sharpe trebles in its mouth on a kayak can be dangerous.

Good fishing

Sam.

Re: Kayaking tips

Very good advice on the falling of and getting back on. Also an anchor is a must and an anchor trolley.
Achoring is probably the most dangerous time with regards to capsizing, never recover the anchor beam on hense the need for the trolley.
