Gilkicker 5/4/11

I headed down to a very windy Gilkicker and was joined by Steve (Scottish and mental). We got set up with penneled fish baits hoping for a spotted ray on one rod and a flapper for anything else on the other. There was plenty of surf and the water was coloured. I saved my blank on my first cast with a pin whiting, then as darkness fell the dogs started to show.

Through the early part of the flood it was bite a chuck with dogs, whiting, pout and a lone small smoothhound for Steve providing the action. Then things got a lot quieter with only the odd bite. I was having trouble with a snag straight out in front of me which claimed a couple of sets of gear and was forced to fish in front of it and cast the other rod out right at an angle.

As the top of the tide approached the pout and pins returned in large numbers at all ranges and were on the baits as soon as they were in. The odd dog was still in amongst them too. I called it a day about 2.30 and left Steve unhooked another dog. Little or no weed all night which was a massive bonus.

good little session .. no raymond but a bonus first common smut pup of the year ...
left about 40 minutes later as the weed decided to build up on the ebb - annoyingly, just as the wind died down to almost nothing ! .. good little mark that's pencilled in as almost weed free and fishable even on a big tide ..

I see my first bass today,not on my hook but looked like a bar of silver in the sun,
