Personally I would save your petrol mate, it's dire down here at the moment and the tides are wrong for a day session.

Thanks for that,I think the tide is about 1830hrs along at Hurst point so I might try along there somewhere.

Learn your local seasonal and tidal variations.
Ask serious match-men and they will tell you there are rockling, pin-whiting and poor cod about.

There used to be good flounder fishing for end of Dec - beginning of March; now they have disappeared.

On my local stretch, fishing begins in March for plaice.
I spend the gloomy period renovating my rods and reels.

I live in north Oxfordshire and won't take a trip down until there is solid intel that some fish are about. Frustrating but at least I can get down on the river for chub occasionally. Might take a walk along the Cherwell tomorrow just for the hell of it and chuck breadflake at the water in the hope of a pull and, maybe, a big chub. Love the beach though so just waiting for some good news.

Hi Oxgull

As it turned out I never made the trip but a couple of mates from Dorset say they are catching some fish from Chesil at night.I have to go to Devon on business tomorrow (monday) so may just pack a rod and have a go on the way back up.
