fun in the rough

last night team speckled headed off again , to the little rocky mark we have sussed out( well ok most in club knows where it is but hey)

got there and tide was alot higher than we expected , quick txtx to mrs p to confirm tide time and game on, we had 3 hours to high would we be washed off before reached high

there was a good surf and swell present so we were warey, but we know this place produces huss

both have made variations on rotten ground rigs, myself useing spark plugs and rich with his rocks idea

3/0 hooks and whole squid of makkie chunks

Rich was first in with a dog, then a small huss
i missed as cracking take and a pulling hard fish that got away, then rich a monster rockling

i then at last managed probably the smallest huss i have ever caught, and rich then got a new pb at 3 1/2 lb



despite not getting the big fish we were after it was a good evening, more so as we have sussed the rough ground rigs, and altough i lost 8 sets of plugs, i lost no other gear

came home 1amish via the kebab shop and town drunk battleground

then decided to be the beach zombies to a guy fishing the front ( as we stoopd and waited to see his rod get puilled in by the weed[ he didnt seem to notice ] )

heres the basic rig i made, there are variations but this way is so quick and easy

My mate and I fish regular pulley pennels with gemini breakers to which we attach a weak link of 10lb line but it took us a while to realise that we were losing leads needlessly with this set up. We found that we were losing more leads due to the weak links being damaged by abbrasion from the rocks than we were by getting caught in snags and so to overcome that we added a length of 25lb line between the weak link and the lead which greatly overcame the abbrasion problem but still allowed us to pull for a break and lose the lead only when we were snagged. As we have our leads made for us localy we asked the guy to add a longer tail wire which has now replaced the link of 25lb line and it does the job very well But I guess if I could find a regular supply of old spark plugs I know what I'd be attaching to the end of my rig!

I was really pleased with the session. I you can probably tell from the size of my new PB, I haven't done an awful lot of rough ground fishing and I finally feel like I've figured out a decent rough ground setup involving freezer bags and pebbles! It worked brilliantly well. I lost one rig all night which clearly must've been snagged by one of the hooks. I can live with that!!

Now if I can just figure out a setup with grip wires......
