the holiday report - days 2&3

day 2 did not fish.

day 3
fished the last 3 hours of the ebb from the carpark wall at blackball lane brixham. light rods and scratching rigs, baits were squid/rag/lug.
tide was going the wrong way really but managed to avoid a blank with a 3 inch pollock on the float.

then after tea stumped up the £4 for the carpark and fished at berryhead quay from 6pm-2am, high tide was for 8.30pm so i was a little more confident of success.
the quay looking towards brixham.

the old lookout.

the last of the anglers left shortly after i arrived, from the start my spinning rod and its 3 hook flapper scratching in close was getting hammered by an endless string of pollock to squid baits up to about a pound in weight the bigger ones giveing a little sport on a light rod till darkness set in then like a switch they turned off the feed to be replaced by occasional pout & poorcod.
while the awb just got the rare attention of the odd pout/poor cod which sometimes hung themselves on the penelled 6/0 sakumas, i'd heard there maybe a codling on the cards, or maybe a conger for the hunt.
the sea bed from the platform felt different from when i fished it last - about 20 years ago( jesus that long??)
back then at distance it felt like clean sand and on a september afternoon i just couldn't miss, bagging up on a string of dabs that were hitting the rag baits as they drifted slowly around in the tide.
but this year the plain leads wouldn't drift about so much and hooks and gripleads would comeback covered in live mussels that had closed on the wires and hooks.
anyway it still slow going as the tide dropped away with barely enough pout activity to keep me awake but i noticed a slower more deliberate pull down on the spinning rod , hit the second tug and then had to pump the beast out from amongst the weed & piles under the platform , at last another one ticked off for the hunt - a minute and rather unsporting conger might have been ok on a fly rod

all dead by 2am , i was cold and bored and out of bait , couldn't do much about the bait or boredom but the trek back to the car sorted the cold, much easier than it was 20 years ago
