Smile Team Speckled Hen IOW Tour Sept 2010-09-27

Day 1 wed 22/9/10

Well at last the time was here
I had been saveing for ages and the tin was cracked to find a respectable £150, get on lets rock

Arriveing at baggies for 8.30 surprise surprise he was all geared up and ready as had been up since 6 and in tesco,s buying a new flask( i shall not elaboutate any more mate )
But obviously this excitement became too much come the 12noon ferry

After stocking up on a few essentials

It was down to the van and find out the score and it was decided that the ESAA would attack Whale Chine en masse

So soon I was faced with the great climb down

But it does lead to a great beach

Seeing kestrals, peregrines and buzzards on the multicoloured cliffs with the natural iron colouring the rocks and beaches as well makes this all just a bit special

It was however a tough evening , baggie was the man to catch as he had pb turbot and Pollock and pout and bass, myself it was 1 mackeral and 1 pout

And that great climb back up, then home for a few beers

Day 2 thurs 23/9/10

Daytime everyone was a bit unsure where to go as a strong northerly had sprung up, so Rich and me decided to go species hunting down the peir

The place was busy, but went and set up in the left hand corner( we were soon in the middle of all te locals, or is that that the locals sqeezed in arround us )

Fishing was not great again, but we knew a trigger had come off day before also a plaice, so we had targets

Funniest part was baggies hat getting blown straight into the drink, then seeing him retrieve with a dexter wedge after( good skills mate)

Baggie had best score again with corkwring wrasse, mackerel and garfish, I just had wrasse, but at least that was first points for the trip

Afternoon we found BK17’s tackle shop in Rye and ordered some bait for next day

Evening and it was way off down the End of Shanklin ( fishermans cottage) hunting sole, as another club member had 3 the night before )

I also kept 1 rod out big hopeing for something else

Well this was really a horrid session for me, the heavens opened on us and I was soon soaked through , as I found out my light weight waterproofs are no longer waterproof !!!
Then that big old moon came out and killed everything, but we still stayed out till 1.30 ish
I lost what I am sure was a ray on big rod other than that it was pout for both of us and a schoolie for rich

Day3 Fri 24/9/10

Back down the pier as the wind was still evil and those trigger were still about
This time geared a bit better, rich ended up with Mackie, gar and wrasse again, myself Mackie and a new PB plaice about 1lb

But we stayed just a tad too late and found that the IOW have a way of notifying you which car is yours( when you park beside an identical one ) by putting a yellow sticker on it for you grrr

After getting bait in pm ( what great lug it was thanks drew ) it was back to shanklin, but this time the esplanade for some simple fishing( lovely shelter out the wind )

And at last a result for rich with this slip of a sole for points

Back not too late for beers and bacon butties

Day4 Sat 25/9/10

A slow start to the day , and then off to cowes to see whats going on( on Drews advise)

A lovely easy place to fish

But a touch busy both with boats and people

, just a few wrasse for me and a blank for rich
Off home via the garlic farm for a few smelly gifts for Mrs P

Evening session we decided on Yaverland as had heard of a few undulates the night before

A pleasant session again almost uninterupted by fish, but I did have a turbot myself and rich a pout

Back for last evening beers and start of tidy up

Day5 Sun 25/9/10

Well we bade good bye to all the others who were on the early ferries and headed off yet again species hunting down the peir

And some success for Rich with theis mighty thornback

I love the way they also smile at you

And also some serious scratching for a whitebait

But all too soon time was up and we had to leave

It was a great few days, I think we were hampered by the big northerlies and flat calm conditions also a huge moon ( 2 sessions never needed tiplights) as the fishing was tough, but no doubt I will return as the venues are stunning, and when the ray are around

between all clubmembers there were 24 or more species caught, i was just unlucky i think with my tally butas arnie says
I'll be back
for Pt 3
The Return of the Ping

About as good as my mighty session this weekend, I love traffic wardens they are such wonderful creatures....I've written to local government in my area to see if we can have a national cull day, all shotguns must be 12bore only.
At least you did better than me on the species front, I said to my mate I didn't like the conditions too, but what can you do when so much effort has gone into planning a session. wwell done great report!

Enjoyed that read!

That smiling pic is class!! Haven't seen that before!

I've got a question for you sea men... When fishing off a beach, i always notice in your photo's that your rods are a good bit back from the sea... Why is this? Is it a tide thing?

Its basically to keep your feet dry mate! on a low lying beach the tide will come in and go out faster and its a pain to keep moving !

cracking report lads ! well done

as S&M says, over there the beaches are very shallow and the sea comes in so fast, if you dont leave that gap you will be moveing every 2 minutes
will be closer on a dropping tide
