shouldastayedinbed, abbotsbury 23rd

2 passes this week- rude not to exploit it

after much deliberation instead of trying to work out where 'they' would be and failing,
i thought i'd sucker them in by fishing where theyre not likely to be,
unfortunately i was right for a change.

stomped up over the bank at abbots about 8pm the sea was calmer than i expected , and that huge bright moon was up and about again
the tide was dropping nicely towards low water @ about 2am- told ya i planned to fish this venue all wrong.
being dark we didn't bother attempting to feather some fresh mackerel & settled for a handful of rag, a box o squid , sandeels & frozen lug, oh plus scavenged some mackerel bits off the beach.

i set up one rod with an optimistic 6/0 varavas bm pennel pulley and the other with a 3 ook flapper in size 2's.
i also added a 3/0 pen pully to them later in a kind of tripple patting method -
2x rods 3x rigs.

my 1st cast produced an almost imeadiate bite which looked like pout or poorcod to me so i left it a while ,
that was a bad move as it resulted in an 8-10 inch snotty that tangled my rig but missed the hooks compleatly, thankful for small mercys i cut him free and released him the flapper rig now reduced to a 2 hook model..
second cast got another

the night dragged on and on with barely a bite to interest us till it clouded over a bit as the tide turned, a good bite on the 3/0 pennel had me running for the rod resulting in a 31cm tub gurnard that took my lug & squid offering, tastily tempting , but i returned it as per usual.

the venue then returned to form with just the occasional missed bite,
fatigue set in and i think i nodded off at some point .

wakeing i noticed that the sky was a little lighter, i'd been trying to get to the chesil in daylight to target gar for some time and so with that in mind i added a 'death slide' float rig to one of my rods for the last 2 casts before we had to leave at 05.30.
the float scored both times 1st with a scad and 2nd with a gar
despite it being still bloody nigh dark.

3 points from a poor session ,
hartley blanked , unless you count to capture of 2 sets of feathers.
to his credit he had his first couple of casts with a multiplier without getting a birdie & in the dark give him a few weeks and more confidence and he'll wish he'd stuck to fixed spools

Re: shouldastayedinbed, abbotsbury 23rd

Looks rather like a RED/GREY Gurnard, as I can't see the turquoise fringe on the pectorals?

Well done, anyway!
