hey dave ,just phoneD my mate that works for m&j seafoods and he say that the plaice are appearing 2 months earlier than normal and that the spawning is at an end...those fish that kiwi and pingu caught were plaice because they had the hard knobbly bits on them (ABOUT 6 OF THEM) that flounder DO NOT HAVE !!!! IF YOU WORKED WITH THESE FISH THEN SURELY YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT THE ONLY SURE WAY TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE IS BY THESE HARD KNOBBLY BITS ......GO TOO YOUR LOCAL FISH MONGER AND TRY IT FOR YOURSELF...

well all i can say was that there were 4 of us on the beach, all said they were plaice, all were well chuffed, and that we caught several more of similar(all returned), they had the smooth back. knobbly head and pronounced mouth, also spots very obvuious for juvenile fish, this happens every time a flat fish is caught, please dont ruin what was a great evening

Only said it to knock this on the head as it is always hard to see which is which and its only a bit of fun - fare enough if a pollock was caught and it was a called a rockling if you know what I mean . We all know its a flounder but hay

When you were a chef and say your fish supplier gave you flounder instead of Plaice, are you trying to tell me you wouldn’t have noticed?

There is only a dispute if there isn’t clarity! Two chefs and four experienced fisherman knew what they caught.

I will apologise for one thing and one thing only to do with this and that is the fact I have lost all humour on the subject.

Believe it or not mate, it does. Most things I say are done very much ‘tongue in cheek’ shall we say.

As my good friend Pete says.......I take the pee out of myself so much, no one else need ever do so!

To me, reading back this thread suggests that one, im a complete liar, or two, im a total idiot with zero fishing experience. I am neither. The thing is, I am one of those guys who isn’t afraid to say I don’t know something…….Indeed one of the sayings I bought to this forum and since then, the forum has adopted is ‘there is only one stupid question, and that’s the one not asked’!
