Bill vs the Bill

After discussions earlier in the week the plan was to head down to Selsey and meet up with sea angling and forum newcomer BillyTattoo who was to travel west from Twickenham...

( before i go on can i just add i did this report once already for my connection to go tits up )

Anyway, after leaving home i headed to Mannings on Hayling to collect some bait before the shops shut as the tides had meant collecting any was out of the question ..
Fresh peeler, rag plus frozen sandeel and squid in the bag i headed for the A27 and the holiday park at West beach.
Arriving at the caravan park i introduced myself to the waiting Bill and his good wife Mary plus their "adopted" daughter Sarah ( more brains in a surgeons bucket ) ..
An earlier phonecall had revealed that on arrival at the caravan park to drop Bill off the family had decided to hire one of the caravans and so begins a bizzare and slightly surreal 36 hours

West beach part 1

After a cuppa myself and Bill headed over to the beach just up from the main entertainments building and after a quick lesson on shockleaders and bait presentation we were both set up and fishing..
The wind was howling from the south west and the sea looked pretty and for the first 2 hours weed wa sa right royal pain !
With the tide ebbing it was a case of waiting till darkness and the start of the flood to chuck out some peeler for the smutts that frequent these parts..
Well , after a few hours of nothing happening a first little rattle appeared on my rod and a small pouting put in a welcome appearance..With advice to Bill to change to worm , within 5 minute another pout and Bills very first sea fish !

Blank saved for us both we sttled down for the fish to totally disappear and a large bear to appear on the shingle behind us...after a brief if not confused introduction , another new forum member Neil ( Raskusdrotti ) and his big Rottie joined us for a while to talk about fishing, the forum and future trips..I apologise to his poor dog who walked all along the shingle trying to find us as i had earlier told Neil to park at the windmill and cross the bank there to find us- a plan that had changed once it had been revealed a caravan had been booked -

A couple of hours later and after a great informative chat we said cheerio and waited for the fish to show up...
By 6.30 we had run out of water so i headed over to the main complex to look for a freshwater tap to replenish the waterbottle.

a short discussion with the security guard present revealed that some moron(s) had decided to smash the windows of atleast 5 cars parked not 10 metres along from mine ..words fail me when it comes to mindless vandalism..
20 minutes later and after a much needed coffee my rod rattled to reveal a nice little bream followed within 2 minutes by Bills second fish and another little bream to match...

After joking about me catching a monster as Bill was sure to follow we started to pack up our gear and get out of the wind and away from the gathering storm clouds, head back to the caravan a grab a kip before heading out again later.

Trying to sleep on a site noisier than Afghanistan isnt easy so by breakfast my eyes were hanging out of the sockets. A fine cooked breakfast and a chat about the nights goings on later we headed back to caravan again to prepare dinner...
Bill and i headed for a swift pint while waiting on the beef and sat outside listeneng to the thunder and watch the Isle of Wight disappear behind the mass of rain

East beach part 2

Fed and watered the plan was to head over to the lifeboat station on East beach and try for a fish or two with our leftover bait ..

The sea was flat calm and the sun was a welcome change from last nights goins on so we quickly set up and within seconds Bill was into his first capture... a rowing boat of specimen size !
With rod set up again and bait back out he was in immediatley but this time it was a micro bream.. a pattern that would continue non stop much to my amusement ..
Not to be outdone and to save the blank i pulled in a double hit ..and another new species for Bill to see -

A guy i had earlier spoke to over on Hayling while collecting bait turned up and after a chat about fishing and looking at pics of some cracking ray and cod caught by him and Shane Pullen plans were made to hit Dungeness in the near future .

By now the sun was setting and we packed up as the tide took the water out plus 3 divers had decided to venture out infront of us )

Bill is here in his camo carp kit trying to disguise himself as the beach -

My plan had been to stay another night but the F.P.O had decided i was going home so after saying my goodbyes to everyone i headed for the motorway and journey home..

I have to thank Bill,Mary,Sarah Neil and the forum plus fishing in general for a great eventfull trip which didn't produce the biggies but im sure if you ask Bill he doesn't care one bit !

footnote..

A phonecall has just revealed that Bill fished on his own today and has managed his first mackerel, a spiny little scorpion fish plus his first Ballan wrasse all from the same spot as last night...The good thing is he absorbs info like a sponge so my job was that much easier and it seems the tuition paid off

Re: Bill vs the Bill

It was great to meet you both and have a good chinwag!

By the time I got over to you I was convinced you hadn't turned up - especially as there were only two of you...

Next time I'll bring the rods with me as well as the dog.

Cheers fellas

Re: Bill vs the Bill

Looks a good session lads well done.

Out of interest, how far do those beach rods cast? See a few set up down the tackle shop and thought they were pretty mean looking!

anywhere in excess of 250 yards with the right reel and user mate but general fishing with baits, wind etc involved mean distances more round the 100 yard mark .
