Hurst 3/8/10

A day off with a small tide with an early low had Hurst written all over it. I got there for the first ferry which was packed with people ready to fish, a couple of SWFF'ers, a family with about twenty rods (ranging from argos specials to 50lb class boat rods) and myself. I got off the ferry and hit the ground running (almost) to make sure I got a decent spot. Found one bloke I know already set-up and unhooking a mackie. Mick is his name and after telling me it was the first of the day he got in his obligatory "how much gear you got with you" ribbing he gives me everytime I fish there! :)

I soon set up after some bream hoping for the a 2lber. Mick had a gar then was bringing in a mackie when he said he had a good bite on his other rod. I looked over to see his rod-rest (an ancient sandspike taped to a vee headed stick) snap and his rod pull towards the sea! I grabbed it for him and could fell a decent fish on, i handed it back to him and he landed a 3lb or so bass. i then had a decent bite myself and landed a bream of about a pound. Hurst was on form, with whitebait being chased up onto the beach by mackies, bass and gars.

I had a few more bream and some mackies on the dexter wedge before things slowed down a bit. They are great fun on light gear with Hurst's strong tidal pull.

I had loads of nips and follows from gars but couldn't hook one on any lures (will modify one for them next time). The bream bites weren't as frequent as I had expected but they fed right through the tide with squid strip and peeler the best baits. Mick hadn't had a bite for ages and said to me "bought time you caught something else isn't it?" and I immediately had a good bite. Resulted in the biggest bream of the session at 1lb 4oz.

Not a bad session with about 8-10 bream most insize and I kept two for a nice bit of grub with a few mackies chucked in too. I'll get the two pounder next time...
