Hurst 5/7/10

Today's tide looked perfect for a bash for some proper bream at Hurst castle and I had managed to wangle a day off work. I didn't fancy the mile and a half walk with all my kit so i got the ferry to the castle. A few old boys were already fishing when I arrived, mainly targetting mackerel but with no success.

I quickly set up expecting a busy days fishing but it was slow, didn't get my first bite until an hour or two into the flood which i failed to connect with. One trouble with this venue is that it's so deep the spiders will happily eat your baits and snip your snoods even in bright sunshine and they were a menace today. Rag, mackie and squid heads seemed to be top of their menu while squid strip lasted a bit longer.

As things were slow it allowed me to chuck a wedge about on my spinning rod looking for a mackerel. I had two fish follow on the retrieve and thinking they might be thin-lipped mullet i changed to a small mepps baited with a small mackie strip. Second chuck with it i had a fish on, not a mullet but a schoolie and blank saved!

Next chuck I noticed my rod baited with squid strip slighty nodding, "damn spiders" i thought. I glanced back at it and my line was on the water, that's no spider! I really had to work to catch up with the fish and when I did the rod hooped over. After a spirited fight I saw a decent bream through the clear water, it had done a good impression of a smutt breaking out a 6oz gripper and dragging it 40 yards!

It weighed in at 1lb 4oz a new PB for me. It took a while for any more bites but I had two more just sizeable bream (released) just before high. Final tally 3 bream and a bass. Others had a few mackerel and a couple of garfish.
