thursday 1st of july. charmouth.

the mission-
1, catch a s/e ray.

2, bigger than daves,

3, avoid the rain,

due to my usual irregular working arrangements,i couldn't fish too late into this morning so i begged an early pass and left at 1pm , Hartley, however wern't allowed out till later.

this found me on east beach at 3pm, which is def east but lately there seems to be some recent confusion as to weather thats on the right or left
east beach on left thats right????
i couldn't remember which side it was advised to fish on the flood so i just wandered off to fish where i often have before,
on the way finding a large cuttle washed up very dead which was later butchered into about 3 days bait supply and stuffed into my coolbag along with the razors, lug, sandeel & squid that resided therein.

but it wasn't that which stopped me short of my target bit o beach to fish,
it was the number of recent cliff falls, one of them appeared to be still slowly moveing , so not wishing to be burried under tons of clay and sand or get cut of by the tide i didn't go as far as i usually would and made a start with a 2 hooked popped up bomber rig & a whishbone. into an area bordering a patch of stones.

at this point it must have been around lowwater with a stiff breeze, force 3,blowing in from the south east, the sky was overcast & theatened rain

from the off it was evident that bite detection would be somewhat compramised by the wave action , wind and a large enough to be irritateing
ammount of green weed wrapping onto me main line and getting batted about by the waves, i saw a couple of knocks dureing the early flood but couldn't connect.
then i went quiet for a couple of hours till i noticed a slackline bite on the wishbone rig,

Re: thursday 1st of july. charmouth.

well i did say it went quiet for an hour or 2, -fell asleep at pc , but at least i saved it this time

where was i, oh arr, slackline, pretty much the same fight as the undulate the other week, i first thought it was just weed till it kicked then after a gentle pump & wind beached the days target specie, a little unusual in daylight here, i thought, but the sea was well coloured out to about 3ooyds.

smalleyed ray, only a couple of lb, but all good for points

and so the popped up bomber was swopped for a 2/0 pully rig , in the hope of a better one .

Hartley arrives shortly after and we fished on through the riseing tide with not a sniff of a bite but increaseing weed problems , lots of green salad drifting about at all ranges but especially a pain in the surf line where the waves would throw it over the lines as they dropped with the weight of the weed they collected further out. irritateing, but a walk in the park compared to hurst shingle,

i had high hopes as darkness fell with the tide still at highwater,
but it still remained just as slow , till 'H' evened the score with a reasonable sized pout just as the heavens opened and the rain that threatened earlier arrived with 1/2 an hour of stairrods and continueing slightly abated.

although the weed situation seemed to be improveing , the rain had dampened our enthusiasm by about 1am and we trudged back over the bridge and onward to our respective parts of wiltshire.

we could could have done without the rain and weed , but it wern't a bad day out .

as i left i went for a natter to 3 other anglers on the carpark wall who like us reported nothing spectacular , as yet.

..........3 species of ray in 2010 so far,

Re: thursday 1st of july. charmouth.

East is right and West is left....At least I thought that was right so I've left it at that.

Well done Gord. They're pretty fish aren't they?
