Town Quay 15/6/10

Was my first session since getting back from holiday and I was joined at town quay by Cuckoo and Scottish and Mental. Sole and bass were to be the main targets and we were looking forward to no weed for a change! It started very quietly in daylight with no action until darkness when Lee kicked things off with the evenings first pouting. I then bagged a target species albeit a small one, my first sole of 2010.

Myself and Lee both failed to connect with decent bass hits down the side, his on live pout mine on mackerel fillet. I'd been targetting hounds all night on one rod with peeler but only managed a small pup. By high water we all had a few bits, a couple of dogs, pout, poor cod and Lee also found his first sole of the year (he'll upload the photo for points). I took a quick snap of one of my poor cod for the species hunt....

Over high lee had a strange bite on live pout, not a quick savage bass bite but a slower yet very deliberate pull-down. He started to retrieve it and got a surprise when it surfaced, a hefty cuttle was hanging on to the pout! It dropped off half way up but Lee sent the now dead and chewed pout back down and the relentless cuttlefish resumed it's attack. This time I deployed the drop-net and the rugby-ball sized cephalopod was on the quay, a first for Lee (although he wouldn't pick it up for a photo)!

The short night progressed with bits here and there although it was quite a slow night. As the first dawn light showed we were confident of first light bass on the ebbing tide, usually a winning formular for town quay bass. There was still time for Steve to add his first sole of the year though.

First light arrived but unfortunately our prime bass baits remianed untouched.

Steve hadn't finished added to his species count though and felt a bit of weight on his retrieve. He was very happy to find a little thornback ray (not a common fish from TQ, especially in daylight), on the other hook was a poor cod.

It wasn't the busiest night but we all managed a sole and had a bit of variety. Our catch consisted of pout, poor cod, LSD's, sole, smoothound, thornback, whiting and the cuttlefish. Nice to have a weed free session for a change though.

Re: Town Quay 15/6/10

Great trip - another 5 species in one session and 3 new ones for the list !
All on bait i'd dug myself so managed to spend nothing ! - although i did lock my key in the boot and was about to break into my own car via a window when a kind gent gave me a hand with some "tools" and a near disaster was averted
Great evening with great company again and im sure Rob is begining to think i hook his line on purpose !
