Talking another carlsberg type weekend 11-13/6/10

last weekend , team speckled were split again( some footy match on saturday night)

and a spur of the minute family camping trip was needed to relax all in the Ping household

so by 7pm fri eve we were chilling on a site just outside of bodmin
( this is a brilliant back to basics site, and so relaxing...http://www.southpenquite.co.uk/camping.html so have no probs promoteing)

just watching awsome sunsets and chilling with a beer( not carslsberg) round a campfire

also a bit of eden project for Mrs P on the saturday

so back Sunday Pm and pass easily given it was off to the River Otter in the hunt with Rich for a mullet

we had 2 forms of attack, floats and bread for the thick lipped and spinner and some almost dead worm ( rapidly died whilst out) for the thin lipped

the river was high as 1 big high tide and 2 it decided to pee down on us for first 1/2 hour whilst there

we both tried the big glide above for nothing, then i did a tad of stalking through some 4ft high nettles and weed

too find this small pool,( made by fallen trees either side so flow slowed right down here)

i could see loads of mullet milling about, some really quite big ones as well, i tried floating for a bit but nowt happening, so i put the spinner through them all and second time bingo, a thin lipped, and probably the smallest in the pool at about 1lb

but result for 1.5 points

the two of us ended up at the bridge till almost too dark but the floats werent working today...so to round of a great weekend we hit the pub for last orders

a good weekend
Happy kids and Mrs P and fishing as well

dave

ps i still prefer Speckled hen to Carslsberg though

Re: another carlsberg type weekend 11-13/6/10

Yep, a good weekend's fishing, but completely frustrating. Whilst Ping was off messing about under canvass, I managed to get out on the Friday night as well as Sunday. Seeing as how I'm having a really crap year so far on the beaches (Best fish is a 4.5lb smut to show for over 100 hours fishing ) I have decided to spend some time targeting fish that I know for a fact are at least there. The only problem with this plan is the fish in question are Mullet. And yes, I now fully understand why they have a reputation for driving otherwise sane men mad.

Friday night saw me at the river with bubble floats and bread. I picked a stretch on the lower river and watched with growing resentment as fish after fish took old baits that had failed to stay on and deliberately left the one with a hook in it alone. Arrgg. There were fish rising everywhere, taunting me. I had flogged away for a good couple of hours when right at the end of one particularly long glide, the float dipped, the line tightened and b*gger me if there wasn't a fish on. I had it on for a good 30 seconds before stupidly messing about with the drag, over doing it and before I knew it, it was gone.

I hang my head in shame. Stupid boy.

Sunday night was pretty much as Dave described... Same tactics but further up stream this time. The main difference was that although there was just as many fish about, they just didn't seem to be rising like they were on the Friday. God knows why?? (In fact I'm starting to see exactly why. These are Mullet we're talking about and they're designed to do your head in.) Couple that with the fact that I managed to find a large, water filled trench towards the end of the night, totally soaking one leg, and it was certainly getting on for pub time.

Ah well, I’ll get one eventually… It might just take a while…

So why did you decline a pint of gods own beer when we got to the pub then eh? The Team Speckled Hen membership scrutinising committee will have to be informed you know.

Lessons learnt
***********

1. Mullet - More infruiating than an England keeper with extra slippery gloves on.
2. Thou shalt ensure your drag is correctly set before starting to fish.
3. When falling on your backside, try, oh try, not to fall on your landing net. It hurts and you'll never bend it back to the same shape again....
