Mount Batten Pier28/05/10

After several different marks and few weeks of trying I managed to catch my first ever shore caught eel.
We fished Mount Batten pier from 2000 - 0200 and on the very first cast using a squid head (caught from Torquay) I had a nice pull down and bingo.
Not the biggest eel, but my first. it weighed just under 7lbs.

Well done. There are a lot of big eels there - up to 50lb I reckon. I used to use a strong beachaster, with my boat reel and 30-lb line, using old spark plugs or nuts/bolts as weights, as you tend to lose a lot of tackle, and lob it out just past the boulders - say 30yards max. The trick is to try and get the bait close enought to the boulders where they live and hide, but far enough away from the boulders to give u a chance of at least getting em up off the bottom! Used to get some screeming runs, from very big eels, problem is they dive straight for the boulders, so you need to bully them straight away. At least you got one - so well done.

Well done on the strap mate you could well do with a sling for weighing decent fish , i got a big carp sling for about a tenner , much better for the fish

Cheers mate, it was weighed in a big bucket and out gill hooked for the photo.
Which is why it onlt reads 5.48 on the scales in the pic.

But I will look in to getting a sling mate.
