| Selsey east beach 19/5/10 Had some left over worm and a couple of small peelers and the chance of a day session. I added a box of squid and headed down to Selsey East beach with my friend Alex. First time I'd fished this venue but I did my homework the night before and bream were to be the target, along with mackies/gars or anything else up in the surface for a bit of side action on the spinning rod. We would be fishing from low up and found the beach shrouded in sea mist at about 11 when we arrived. First cast the rig came back minus a hook with a mangled snood, the second cast confirmed my fears as I dragged in my nemesis....the spider crab! They were only a problem for the first hour or so when the sun burnt through the mist, when I expect they retreated to deeper darker water. Fishing was slow so I set up my spinning rod with a 28g dexter wedge, there was a big outfall pipe of freshwater on the groyne to our left. First cast in front of it I had a fish on, gave a great fight on light tackle and jumped clear of the water twice, my first gar of the year. ![]() I thought we would be in for a gar-fest but strangely it was the only action on the spinners all day. The bream rods remained stationary all day and the weed became a problem towards and at high, but still fishable with 6oz at close range. lack of fish but a nice day in the sunshine. |
