Brighton Squid

I was on location in bay 48 on Brighton Marina East arm by 6.45 am yesterday to try and pop my squid cherry for 2010 after a couple of unsuccessful attempts earlier in the week. It was a bright morning with just a slight Southerly breeze and surprisingly cloudy water.

Setup usual squidding gear - carp rod, bait runner and sliding float rig, ending with a squid jig. I spent bloody ages working the float, changing jig colours, sizes and so on. Didn't get my first and only take until 1pm - about an hour before HW. Luckily for me another guy I know and his mate had a drop net as I'd left mine at home. A minute or so later, after Richard guided the net-handling Nick, my first landed squid of 2010 was on the deck and what a relief it was too.

The rest of the day was dead, no further takes at all, not so much as a sniff.
I left the marina by about 4pm and once home, the days catch was cleaned sliced and fried for tea, there's nothing quite like straight from the sea onto the plate freshness.

Re: Brighton Squid

Well done on your 1000th mate!

Difficult to describe the taste cos it all depends on how it's cooked really. If cooked on it's own (no sauces or whatever), providing it's not overcooked (bad thing - very rubbery), it's quite sweet, I suppose the nearest I can think of is scallop meat.

As for bait, the heads can be good winter cod bait.

I agree, but its also a great bait for early plaice that are just coming in slowly but they are here and very shortly will be in numbers after spawning and if you had just that fresh squid cut into small strips, you would have free bait and plenty of plaice. Saying that i like to wait a while longer when they have put on a bit thats why i said end of april guys way back, ive had plaice this year not many but a few and they are abit on the thin side. Anyway hope you enjoy it. If you do catch another one next month try it on its own are as a tipping bait withr rag or and lug, you could open a super market as the catch rate is mental, i know ive done it in the past DEADLY. Tight lines. The fish have to be there in the 1st place to catch as you know, some beaches in england are full of fish all year round lucky sods.
