what a c*ck up...Sidmouth Competition 7/4/10

last night was definately one for the records or then again maybe not

all started well with rich being ready nearly on time( after sourcing batteries etc,,) and we arrived on time for me to do the sign in

so the 12 of us all stretched out along the beach from the harbour to chit ledge.
the weather was lovely and the sea flat,, mmm maybe a chance of an early ray

set up the rods and went to the box for rigs to realise i had left the rig box infront of telly where i had made the rigs tuesday night grrr, wich shifty in the base and i found 2 big pulley rigs 4/0 from the channel trips, not necesarially best for a comp, but i loaded one with sandeel and cast out CRACK!!!!! 1 rig gone I had forgotten had last used up channel with megawind retrieve and crap line lay

so cobbled together a simple 1 up one down rig and worm before got too dark and sent that an easy flick out on other rod so was at least fishing ,, then scrounged some 2/0 hooks to sort other pulley rig and swapped reels to start again, this time bait out ok( this reel was really playing up after 2 casts as well, possibly due too some dodgey old 20lb line i won somewhere)
dureing this time Rich cast his first rod for the same result as mine poxy BC

then we sat and waited ,, waited this was going to be a long night

with an hour to go i made a squid and sandeel wrap and at last nailed a cast and bingo i get a doggy( also guy to lefts rod and the rig i lost earlier, felt like i had something far better on

then with about 1/2 hour to go i get a bite on the worm and its an undersized flounder, then just on last cast (as ever) a double shot with undersized whiteing and rockling

rich caught a silver ell which spat the hook on the beach and wriggled back before could get points for it ( club comp and species comp)

come the weigh in the only fish caught in size were dogs and rockling and Adrian won with Si keeping top spot with a 2nd place

i suppose at least i managed to weigh in at last
but was a very very frustrateing night

Not the result you wanted, BUT you were on a beach fishing. That's gotta be better than sitting at home watching telly.

Better luck next time mate. At least a few fish are starting to show. I wish eels would spit the hook a bit more often rather than tying my rigs up in knots....

Well what can I say? Cracked a brand new rig and leader off first cast (which I got back a little later) and a whole lot of nothing for the rest of the night apart from the eel.

Now, don't get me wrong, I dis-like eels at the best of times. If it weren't for the species hunt, I'd be happy never to catch another one ever again, however it had been a slow night, very slow in fact and with the new scoring system in the monthly comps, eels are classed as "other species" and therefore worth 5 points.

Guess how many points won the comp last night? Yep less than five.......

Ah well, I shall claim the point for the species hunt (As it was certainly on the beach and landed) but will now have to set about catching another for the photo and extra half point. Grrrr. .

A good social night though. Sooner of later, they are going to turn into good fishing nights as well!!!

Fair play guys for catching anything under the circumstances, and dave how did you forget your rigs mate, i always forget something wheather its bait elastic etc, i once forgot my coasters for a casting day, know the feeling so as i said well done for catching anything without your rigs

Sessions like that are shite but then it helps you to appreciate the good ones!
