St. Brides Lighthouse 29/12/04

Finally got the chance to get out and try fishing for cod on Wednesday night. I was originally going to try Sudbrook but heard encouraging reports from the Lighthouse and it sounded like I stood a chance of a decent whiting or flattie even if the cod didn't show. High tide was about 20.45 and I fished 1.5 hours up and 1.5 hours down. There were a lot of people about, probably about 20 in total and the fishing is quite comfortable there, fishing off a grass bank over mud with the only problem being getting back over the boulders that form the flood defences. Fished with rag / squid on a clip down pennel rig (3/0 and 1/0) at first with no bites, switched to whole squid but still no bites and finally switched to just rag on a single 1/0 clip down rig in the hope of getting at least a whiting but still nothing. It was the same story with everyone else I spoke to with only one small whiting being caught by the 4 or 5 anglers I spoke to some of which hand been catching large amounts 2 weeks ago. Still, at least I got out and had my first real go at night fishing and cod fishing and didn't lose any gear or fall on the rocks!

Never mind mate...at least you got out to fish.

I heard they are catching Codling from Aust. There was a match there on Monday and 25 were weighed in up to 3lbs all caught on lug or lug/ squid 30-40 yards out. I couldn't fish it but will make up for it soon!!
