| Re: Chesil Saturday It went something like this... Greenheart and I loaded up at about 9am and headed for Weymouth to get a few bits. No worms at the Angling Centre, but fortunately Dennings sorted us out with a few rag, lug and stickers. We also had squid, black lug, mackerel, peelers and even a bunch of succulent mussels which I'd patiently shelled the night before. According to the staff at both angling shops, fishing on Chesil beach was sloooow.... ![]() Arrived on the beach feeling optimistic, but the waves were thundering in even though it was windless and pleasantly warm. Probably ok for tournament casters, but for Ian and myself, our mere-mortal status meant that our casts were about 200 yards short of where we'd have liked them, in order to avoid having our like dragged down into the shingle. 2 hours and several sets of terminal tackle later we decided to make a move and head for the shelter of Portland Harbour and Ian's top secret hot spot, allegedly stuffed with bass....Quote from Ian: "At high tide, you end up perched on top of a rock for a couple of hours, surrounded by water with no way off until the tide drops back" It sounded ideal! Anyhow, we fished there for a bit, watching the ever encroaching tide, but decided that it would make sense to move up the beach a bit and save the rock-hopping for another day. Ian had fished at this spot a few times before with a local guy (also on this forum) who'd introduced him to it. Ian gave him a quick phone call and a little later he joined us on the beach for a natter, which was great. "No bass here mate" he laughed "it's waaaay too cold...they all left in late autumn. Maybe a founder..." Slightly despondent at this news, we fished on for a few more hours until Ian suddenly shot from the armchair-like comfort of his Beta Box with the agility of a whippet. Yes folks, he had a bite! In case he hasn't already phoned you with the glad tidings, Ian had a plump bass of about 2.5lbs, caught on a flounder rig. You can see a photo of it in the Species Hunt section of this site, though I'm sure he'll upload some photos here before long... ![]() A couple more hours passed, and at 8pm we decided to call it a day, with the promise of a Chinese takeaway topmost in our minds. Arrived home at about 11 after Ian decided to take a short cut via god-knows-where, but it had been a splendid day. Especially for him ![]() With sincere apologies to my species hunt partner. I promise to do better next time... |

| What Jerry forgot to mention was that we whimped out Saturday due to the Gale force wind & heavy rain. So a quick reschedule saw us heading for Chesil on Sunday instead. Weatherwise it was a good idea, but sadly the surf had not dropped to a comfortably fishable level. However a few rays of early spring sunshine made up for this... ![]() ![]() ![]() )![]() __________________ Don't Judge My Path If You Haven't Walked My Journey... |
