chesil, ferrybridge end.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
well the usual thursday night jaunt got scuppered due to hospital appt friday morning and so after a bit of a shunt around of commitments and the like,
a mad midnight - midday session was on the cards + the chance for another go at some day light species again.

1 am (damn daft time to start a fishing session but never mind) found me set up in my green beach buddy with both rods in the briney, just passing time coz the prime target wern't due to wake till sun up ( triggerfish).
with high tide due for 11am things commenced with fishing the last 4 hours of the ebb things unsurprisingly were slow.

bait- squid, sandeel, bluey, black lug all froze. suplimented by some fresh mackerel later.

rigs- pennel pulley, up n over, flowing trace(long n light), 3 hook flapper , wishbone and a float rig slid down the mainline to fish the 'margins' .

with just the odd little knock it wasn't till the tide turned at about 04.30 that i saw the first good spirited bite , that persistant nod,nod that just made me think doggie, the fight felt a bit more energetic than usual but sure enough it was a dog that got cranked in. but on a closer look i could see it was a baby huss

1st fish and another specie ticked off for this year

the following cast had only just settled for a few minutes when the rod slammed down after a breif tussle i'd beached the best pollock for me so far this year, not massive but def' dwarfed the ones at brixham.
both fish had fallen to sandeel.

then it was all quiet till sun up, i feathered for some mackerel but no joy , a few more anglers arrived with the sun.

with the sun out it was not long before those little nibbley bites started , 3 hook flapper with size 3 hooks sorted them

i guessed they were bream, i caught 2-3 more over the day all around 10-11inches nice and thick but all returned

the angler next to my managed to catch a couple of mackerel which made me think about mid water species and still to catch a gar this year a float was employed with a 4ft trace & a litttle lead to slide downthe main line and fish in close, the light winds and steep angle of the shingle let it work out to about 30ft which is often plenty,
success with in 10 mins,

more points
i caught 3 but regretted not bringing my light float/ spin rod to let these mini bill fish give a good account of themselves + this method seems often to deep hook as it is imposible to strike cleanly to help prevent this ,
and so with nothing better to do swopped rigs on one rod for a clipped down wishbone to explore extreme range and or puff up my multipliers depending on how exuberant i got with backing off the mags / brakes.
with the wishbone clipped & whacked i set about digging out a set of sabiki's and see how far i could cast them .( all nice n safe with few people on the beach)
b4 i get the chance to open the packet the wishbone rod hoops over, swiftly strikeing the 2nd pull & its game on , i thought i had a good bass with lots of head shakeing and line getting stripped, the stubborn critter scrapped all the way in giveing no quarter.

it wasn't a bass but i wasn't disapointed-mission acomplished

not a big one but i'd forgotten just how fiesty these little buggers are. it was the only one of the session despite trying for more.

after that i set to with the sabiki's and found that a few mackerel were there along with pollock underneath them. i was casting as far as i could then letteing them sink , often i'd feel the fish taking on the drop.
with 3 mackerel caught and bait resuplied i went back to bait fishing with rigs set up for small stuff & the up nover back out again with a big bait as i had done on and off throughout the session then promptly fell asleep, dreaming of an early cod .

didn't get my codling but even so , not a bad day

btw, they are resurfaceing the road outside dennings and traffic is chaos at rush hour atm. just about got back to get the kids from school.

final tally,

1 triggerfish.
1 bullhusslet
6-8 pollock.
3 mackerel.
3 garfish
1 micropout ( got mugged by a cuttle on the way in , then deadbaited.)

That's not funny....

Well done mate. Knew you'd get one in the end. Nice report.

I fear I'm going to have to give up the trigger for this year. Daylight passes might be fairly hard to come by for a while, but next year....
