| Isle of Wight , score board. Well this was intended primarily as a family holiday, a celebrate my mothers birthing pains in bringing my little brother in to the world in August 1969 (St Marys Newport too) and a fish if possible so the report is a little brief. Before I go any further , apart from the fishing , the annual migration to the island was , yet again, a great success having decided to do some different stuff this time. So it was walking , cycling and different pubs and stuff. The Isle of Wight really is breathtakingly beautiful. Took my little bro' 35 years to go back but I think he might even be considering moving back permanently at some point. Darned place never leaves you once you've been there . On to the fishing front. Session one, day time Compton Bay (still my wife's favourite beach on the planet and she's a Wolverhampton girl , so she ai seen nothin' but the cut when she was small), on the rocks by the dinosour foot prints (Hanover Point). Dead low tide, spinning with plugs and eels under a bubble float. Caught nowt, but did see something odd. I was checking my ABU Tormentors action and was just dragging it past some rocks when a dark shape shot out and "had a go". Too small to be a wrasse or bass. It must have been a big blenny, right agressive beggar he was too. Appeared to be nipping the tail of the plug. So mental note made. With a small hook and a small plug could this be one for the species hunt on a lure ? Hmm!! Session Two and three. Gurnard after mullet. WAY too windy and the sea was rough as hell and coloured. Didn't even tackle up but did feed some bread in a futile attempt to raise somit. Session Four, Sea still coloured but less rough. Still a waste of time but did tackle up. Caught nowt. Session Five. Early hours near egypt light Cowes. Sea calm as hell, felt great. Someone else was fishing the light so I pulled up at the next set of steps (towards Gurnard). Baited with large rag bait and plopped a bait about 40 yards out . MP3 player in and watch the tip. Slow draggy bite. Hmm! Looks odd, WEED! WEED! Ahhh! No. Did see a HUGE liner on it's way to disrupt the poor beggars trying to fish town quay. Cast longer and it was titchmarshs compost heap. So cast 30 yards. Quick rattley bite and a school bass was on , released and on his way to a japanese trawlers net . Session Six. Newton Creek for the mullet. Blowing really hard and after an hour or two gave up. What a cracking find though, if there aren't mullet here then I'm a Frenchman, saw a few HUGE! greys on the walk back to the car. So the fishing was a disaster but the trip was far from it. Thanks to union street tackle in Ryde , yet again, great bait and a friendy place for a chin wag. We've asked the kids where they want to go next year on hols and it's still the same , ISLE OF WIGHT. You never know , if my brother can be pursuaded, we could camp in his garden. If not then a slightly later (and therefore cheaper ) return to Nodes Point may be on the cards. __________________ Just remember, not all the heroes died. www.helpforheroes.org.uk |

| Re: Isle of Wight , score board. I'm hoping that next year we might go back to nodes point. This is right on St Helens beach and it's just so easy to catch a couple of hours when the girls are all in bed. Better still I can have a can or two (which I of course take back and out in the rubbish, can't abide litter). __________________ Just remember, not all the heroes died. www.helpforheroes.org.uk |
