The past few weeks i've been thinking about thornbacks as the next target for my specie hunt,
i fluked a good un last year but any size will do for the lists.
being unable or p'raps to damn lazy to get some rag i settled for squid & fish baits then set forth for hill head, a noteable venue for these beastys.

when i got there it appeared everyone else had read the same catch report of the 12lb 5oz er caught there t'other night and there were a few anglers crowding the end of the wall i'd favor .
with the choice of fishing ( imho) the less likely end or another venue i left for the mark where i got me pb last year.

it was a spring tide for a 23.00 high water, the wind was really light , easterly which swung southerly over night
leaveing the sea flat calm.
just right bar the full moon which fortunately was masked by a little thin cloud -but not enough ( darker the better).

by 8pm i had both rods out fishing moderate sized baits on pulley rigs and the like, but things were sloooooow,
just the odd tiny little knock that came to nothing bar what ever it was swipeing the squid tip to my baits.
inevitably i got bored & the cigarette craveings got bad, at one point i was quadruple patting rigs just to give me something to do despite it being compleately pointless.

even the little knocks gave up over high tide, i was wondering there were any fish there at all or was it just me fishing like a compleate idiot
by the start of the ebb i was praying to what ever gods there my be for a fish of any sort.

they must have been listening coz they granted my prayers with a................................................. .................................................. .................... ........................................

i was so impressed, i went to sleep, -
several times through the rest of the night till 4am.
when i dismantled the bivvy, but still a glutton for punishment me and the rods walked out on the gravel bar that gets exposed at lowwater to fish the point till the flooding tide pushes me back on to the beach at dawn. gave it 2 biteless hours till the rain started then gave up for good at 6am.

i got back this morning to read a report about a 12lb 9oz thornie landed about 1/4 mile east of where i was, dunno how they got on at hill head,

i just can't seem to get in the right place at the right time yet this year, but my time will come

Top marks for effort Gord, shame there weren't more fish mate, but like you say, keep this up and you'll soon have some decent fish.
