| Dave and I had another go at Abbotsbury last night. Our idea was that the change in the wind direction might be enough to stir up a little activity in the water and we might manage to magic out a codling or two against all the recent reports we've been hearing. We got to the car park by 20:30 and discovered that quite a few other people had had exactly the same idea as us. A quick walk up the boardwalk revealed quite a few lights, a fair old surf running and a steady onshore wind, but we decide to drop into a gap and fish it rather than head back to West Bex. We’d just got back to the car to start getting sorted, when two guys from Cardiff returned to their car next to us. Turns out they’d fished for quite some time for no bites what-so-ever. Comments like “I’d save your bait mate.” And “a 2 ½ hour drive for that!” didn’t exactly instil a sense of confidence, but we yomped up over the bank, hoping we might have better luck anyway. Of course, this is me we’re talking about, so therefore I shouldn’t really have been surprised when the session started off badly and then got steadily worse. ![]() It started off by discovering when I unpacked my reels that I hadn’t yet put a shock leader on the sports mag I’d serviced during the week. Bu**er. I hate this as a first job in a session: I just want to get on with the fishing, but after about 15 mins of faffing around, I’d managed to get my other rod in the water and was preparing to cast the newly shock leadered Sports Mag. I set up the mags, heaved away a fairly respectable (For me!) cast, and was just putting the reel back in gear when I noticed something small and silver bounce off my chest and onto the Chesil shingle. A check of the reel confirmed that numpty boy here had not only forgotten to put a leader on, but he’d also slacked off the float end cap of the reel a bit too much and it was now hiding amongst a million pebbles on the beach. In the dark. ARSE. Another 10 mins of searching and faffing followed before I actually managed to find the damned thing, sorted everything out and settled down into the fishing. ![]() To say it was quiet would be an understatement. It’s certainly not like we were pestered by fish or anything. Within an hour, we were nearly the only people left on the beach and the 2 hours after that only really consisted of standing around bitching about the stinging bloody wind and throwing perfectly good bait into a sea seemingly devoid of fish life. Even the fox who ventured down to the shore line looking for scraps, took one look round, thought better of it and headed back to the car park. At the very last knockings, Dave managed to tempt a hard fighting Rockling and I myself pulled out what Dave reckons is a poor cod to save the blank, but all in all, it was a session to forget really. Ah well, we’ll do it all again next week and love every minuet of it eh??? Lessons learnt ************ 1. When you service your gear, it pays to have another look so see if it’s gone back together as it should. ![]() 2. Doom saying Welshmen in car parks should not be ignored. As a friend of mine tells me, they always know best. 3. Planning meetings in the pub are sometimes the sensible option. The trick is deciding which ones are and which ones aren’t. ![]() Dave's 5 bearded waskly wockling My very Poor Cod __________________ Right then, checklist: Rods. Check. Reels. Check. Speckled Hen. | Re: Abbotsbury 10/01/09 cracking result ,finding that end cap once lost in the pebbles, most small items are lost for good. plus of course blank avoidance by both you and dave .jan & feb are always tough from the beaches, i don't know why i get so keen at this time of year but with specie hunt scores zeroed there's all to play for , its never too soon to take the lead if you can .btw, def a poor cod- large eye well forward + no black spot at base of pecoral fin, better than being sat indoors watching teley, but if the pub was an option its a tough call __________________ beer so many venues, so little time. |
